A progressive member of the Seattle City Council who has been critical of law enforcement because of the "defund the police" movement criticized police for not pursuing reports of feces being thrown into her yard.

Kshama Sawant, a self-proclaimed socialist, sent a letter to police in Seattle claiming they are failing to investigate six separate instances of a politically motivated person throwing feces into her yard.

After a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest was held a short distance from her mansion, former Mayor Durkan was given a 24 hour stakeout for a full year. As a socialist City Councilmember who has participated in Black Lives Matter protests, I am being told that my case of six threatening incidents involving human excrement doesn't merit a serious investigation.

The Seattle Police Department, where staffing has dropped to a 30-year low as officers left the force in droves, asked the public for help catching the suspect by releasing photos of him.

According to a law enforcement source, deFUNDING the police created a "death effect" that endangers everyone.

The police said that friends of the victim were watching the home when the suspect threw a plastic bag into the yard. The friends took pictures of the suspect as he fled. The suspect was described as an Asian man by witnesses.

Sawant is going to file a complaint against the police.

GOP public safety bills are an attempt to get rid of past support for police reform.

KIRO-TV reported that Sawant proposed to slash the police department's budget by $85 million in 2020. She was one of hundreds of people who occupied city hall in 2020 in order to demand the resignation of Jenny Durkan.

Sawant's office didn't reply to a request for comment.

Both Democratic lawmakers and members of the media have pushed the movement to defund police.

The Seattle Police told KCPQ-TV that they take crime seriously.

The police said that investigators canvassed for evidence, gathered information from witnesses and reviewed everything collected so far. The department has not found any evidence that the case would meet the city's or state's hate crime laws. Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the police.
