With record-breaking exchange rates between the euro and dollar, it's no wonder so many people want to explore and shop in Europe.

One of the most popular programs to book transcontinental awards is the Flying Blue program. Business and economy mileage redemptions between the US and Europe have been known for a long time.

Premium economy flights are one of the sweetest places to fly. Flying Blue allows travelers to cross the Atlantic for as little as 30,000 miles on some days.

If you are looking for your next European escape, this is the place to go.

Why it’s special

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

For the same amount of miles as Air France or KLM, you can get a more comfortable seat, better service, and a better meal, if you choose to fly in premium economy.

The redemption value is much higher than the 1.2 cents per mile valuation of the company.

Next summer, this price is also available. You can fly from JFK to Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport for the same 30,000 miles in premium economy.

It seems that this low rate is available from multiple East Coast cities to many European cities.

Flying Blue has taxes and fees that are high. It's not unusual for a one-way award to cost over $300 round-trip.

How to earn points for this award

JOHN GRIBBEN

Flying Blue miles are easy to earn in the US.

You can transfer points from many programs to Flying Blue. There is a 5,000 mile bonus for every 60,000 Marriott points transferred. The other programs transfer at a 2:1 rate.

Here are a few of the most popular credit cards from the company.

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card: Earn 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $4,000 on the card within the first three months of account opening.
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve: Earn 80,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $4,000 on the card within the first three months of account opening.
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card: Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on the card within the first three months of account opening.
  • Citi Premier® Card: Earn 80,000 Citi ThankYou Points miles after spending $4,000 on the card within the first three months of account opening.
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express: Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $6,000 on the card within the first six months of membership.

Transferrable points should be earned.

Bottom line

You can fly more comfortably if you pay less for economy. The award option is great for travelers departing from the East Coast as it allows them to visit a wide variety of European cities.

Taxes and fees are still reasonable compared to cash tickets. It's a good idea to put this surcharge on a card that earns bonus points for airfare.

This sweet spot is perfect for getting to Europe in a little more luxury without breaking the bank because of the ease of access to Flying Blue miles.
