There were six at that point.

There have been close calls and upsets in college football this season.

Georgia and Michigan enjoyed bye weeks as the top of the rankings remained solid.

It's time to check out this week's rankings because the College Football Playoff picture is starting to take shape.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes (7-0)

Iowa's historically bad offense doesn't mean a lot since the Ohio State's defense is clearly better. On the first play of the game, McCalister picked off a pass and the rest of the Ohio State defense recorded six turnovers in a 54-10 win. After the open week, the Ohio State offense looked rusty and struggled to run the ball. Ohio State has more than enough with Emeka Egbuka, Marvin Harrison Jr., andJulian Fleming despite the health concerns of wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Next up is at Penn State.

The Ohio State quarterback passed to a receiver for a touchdown.

2. Georgia Bulldogs (7-0)

Georgia had a close call at Missouri in the first half of the season. The state of Oregon was no match for it. South Carolina was not one of the three. After an off week, we will find out more about the Georgia's title hopes when they play Florida in Jacksonville and host Tennessee the following week. Anthony Richardson could be a good tuneup for the Vols.

The next game is against Florida. The program is hosted by CBS.

3. Tennessee Volunteers (7-0)

The Vols scored 34 or more points for the seventh game in a row in a 65-24 win over UT-Martin. In the first half, the Vols scored their most points ever, and Hooker threw a touchdown pass for the 19th straight game. After catching five touchdown passes against Alabama, Jalin Hyatt caught two more for the Vols.

The next game is against Kentucky. The app is available on the Disney/ESPN website.

4. Michigan Wolverines (7-0)

The Michigan football team had a bye this week. The UM offense had 418 rush yards and four touchdown on the ground, with two of them coming from two different players. After a week of rest, the team will play Michigan State, a team that has struggled this year. The Spartans are hoping to ruin the perfect season of the Michigan team.

The next game is against Michigan State. The ABC/ESPN app is available on the App Store.

5. Clemson Tigers (8-0)

In a game that was far from perfect, the Tigers turned to their backup quarterback, who led them to a 27-21 victory over Syracuse. DJ Uiagalelei had three turnovers and was sent to the sideline. The offense settled down after only throwing four passes and relied on its powerful rushing game. It was the first comeback victory led by a backup quarterback in over a year and a half. The turnover margin was minus 3 for the first time in four years. The defense held Syracuse to zero points in the second half and limited Sean Tucker to five runs. It's the longest home winning streak in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Next up is BYE.

6. Alabama Crimson Tide (7-1)

The quarterback threw for two scores. He had a sack. The play of the secondary may have been the most promising development of the game. The Alabama pass defense held Will Rogers to 50% completions and no touchdown after being torched by Tennessee.

Next up is BYE.

7. TCU Horned Frogs (7-0)

For the second week in a row, the Frogs were down at halftime, but came back to beat a ranked opponent. The Kansas State offense was held without a touchdown in the second half by the TCU Frogs. With wins over four ranked opponents for the first time in school history, the Frogs' magical season rolls on, with Max Duggan throwing touchdown passes to three different receivers and Kendre Miller torching the Cats for 280 yards and two touchdown.

Next up is at West Virginia.

8. Oregon Ducks (6-1)

After losing to Georgia by 46 points in Dan Lanning's debut as Oregon head coach, the Ducks have dominated the rest of the time. Thanks to a surprise onside kick in the second quarter and a picture-perfect performance from Bo Nix, Oregon trounced the Bruins to cement its position as a top contender in the conference.

Next up is at Cal.

9. Oklahoma State Cowboys (6-1)

Oklahoma State blew a 14-point lead and lost its perfect record. The Cowboys came back on Saturday. They trailed Texas by 14 in the second quarter and by 10 in the third but came back to win 41-34. The Cowboys' defense held the Longhorns to two turnovers in the second half, and Spencer Sanders threw for 891 yards and two fourth-quarter scores. The winning margin was provided by Green's 41-yard reception and run with 3:09 left in the game.

Next up is at Kansas State.

10. USC Trojans (6-1)

The bye week came at a difficult time for the team. After dropping a close one to Utah on the road for their first loss of the season, some on the team wish they could have been able to play immediately. USC will need to be near perfect in the second half of the season if they want to have a chance in Lincoln Riley's first year as head coach.

Next up is at Arizona on Saturday. The time is not known.

11. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (6-1)

Wake Forest defeated Boston College 43-15 on Saturday. Hartman completed 25 of 40 passes for 313 yards, five touchdown and one rushing touchdown. With Hartman spreading the wealth, a pair of sophomore wide receiver, Jahmal Banks and Taylor Morin, combined for 11 reception for 127 yards and two touchdown. The team has amassed at least 400 yards of offense six times this season. Wake Forest won its third game in a row after allowing 56 rushing yards.

The next one is at Louisville on Saturday. The network and app are available for free on the app store.

12. Penn State Nittany Lions (6-1)

After a loss to Michigan, the Nittany Lions rebounded with a win over Minnesota. Sean Clifford threw for 295 yards and four touchdown, making him the most prolific passer in Penn State history. A freshman running back had two touchdown runs. The Penn State defense only gave up 17 points in the victory.

The next game is against Ohio State.

13. UCLA Bruins (6-1)

The UCLA train that was burning through the tracks in recent weeks, beating Washington and Utah, came to an abrupt stop Saturday as the Bruins couldn't stop the Oregon offense. They didn't score enough themselves. After three straight games of scoring 40 points or more, the rest of the Bruins' offensive unit looked powerless in a tough road environment that included a sold-out crowd, rain, and a difficult defense.

The next game is against Cardinal on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. The app is available on the Disney/ESPN website.

14. Utah Utes (5-2)

Utah didn't play this week in preparation for the last five games of the regular season after a big win against USC. Utah might be the best team in the conference, but it didn't show up for the first two games of the season, against Florida and UCLA. It's no surprise that quarterback Cam Rising and defensive back ClarkPhillips III have been playing well.

Next is at Washington State on Thursday. The game is played on the FS1 network.

15. Ole Miss Rebels (7-1)

The Rebels scored 17 points in the first 3 minutes of the game. The LSU balanced offense was too much for the Ole Miss defense to handle. In its 45-20 win over the Rebels, LSU piled up 400 of its 500 yards of offense in the final three quarters. Evans missed the game with an injury. Even with Evans, Ole Miss wouldn't have been able to keep up with LSU's offense. LSU loaded up and came after quarterback Jaxson Dart, who completed just 10 of his final 24 attempts.

Next is at Texas A&M. The SEC Network is available on the SEC Network app.

16. Illinois Fighting Illini (6-1)

A team that reflects the core principles of run heavy offense, stout defense and formidable line of scrimmage play can be created in less than two years. Chase Brown has put himself on the fringes of the Heisman Trophy conversation, leading the FBS in rushing (1,059 yards), 100-yard rushing performances (7), runs of 10 yards or more (33) and other categories. The defense of the Illini leads the nation in points allowed and yards allowed. An open week allowed Illinois to take a break and rest up for the Big Ten West Division title push.

Next up is at Nebraska on Saturday. The time is not known.

17. Kentucky Wildcats (5-2)

After coming off their most complete game of the season in a 27 17 win over Mississippi State, the Cats had a bye. In a 22-19 loss at Ole Miss, Kentucky made a lot of mistakes, and in a 24-14 loss to South Carolina, quarterback Will Levis was out with an injury. The quarterback's protection has been a problem all season. A total of 26 sacks have been allowed by the Cats. Chris Rodriguez ran the ball 31 times for 199 yards in the win over Mississippi State, as he was back after three games. The defense has been good enough for the team to be perfect. They have allowed just 12 touchdown in seven games, tying them for 12th in the country.

Next up is at Tennessee on Saturday. The app is available on the Disney/ESPN website.

18. Kansas State Wildcats (5-2)

Will Howard threw two touchdown passes in place of Adrian Martinez, who left the game after just two pass attempts and one run. After Howard helped K-State build a 28-17 lead in the second half, the Horned Frogs held the Cats without a point for the rest of the game, with two missed field goals and an intercept by Jake Rubley on his first attempt.

Next up is against Oklahoma State.

play

The lead over Kansas State is back in the hands of Texas Christian University.

19. Syracuse Orange (6-1)

Multiple missed opportunities are reasons why the Orange blew an 11 point halftime lead. Syracuse was unable to take advantage of two second-half turnovers. The last chance to win was thrown away by Shrader. The offense could not get going in the second half, as both Shrader and Tucker were not effective, and the defense ended up on the field too long. The ball was held for almost eight minutes.

The next game is against Notre Dame.

20. LSU Tigers (6-2)

The timing is perfect for LSU. After an embarrassing loss at home to Tennessee, he has played his best two games at quarterback in a row. They came back from a 17-3 deficit to beat Ole Miss. Daniels passed for two more and ran for three more as the tigers ran for 500 yards. Daniels had a six-touchdown performance against Florida.

Next up is BYE.

21. Cincinnati Bearcats (6-1)

With senior quarterback Ben Bryant working his way back from a concussion, Cincinnati relied on its running game and special teams to squeeze out a win. A career-high five field goals from junior Ryan Coe and a career-high 129 rushing yards from senior Charles McClelland helped the Bearcats to a record-tying 19th straight American Athletic Conference win. The first field goal of the game was set up by an intercept by Arquon Bush. The first half had two touchdown runs.

Next up: at the University of Central Florida.

22. North Carolina Tar Heels (6-1)

North Carolina was 10th in the country in total offense at 509 yards per game. Maye has thrown at least three touchdown passes in every game he has played. The Tar Heels, who average 41.7 points, are the only team left in the conference with a perfect record.

The next game is against Pitt. The time is not known.

23. Tulane Green Wave (7-1)

The first half was a perfect one for the Green Wave. The Green Wave held on for dear life to win 38-28 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in New Orleans. The Green Wave's early explosion was highlighted by a 90-yard touchdown by Jha'Quan Jackson. Memphis scored on four consecutive possessions in the second half, but that didn't stop the Green Wave from moving to 7-1 and 4-2 in the American Athletic Conference. The Green Wave have been one of the best stories of the season.

Next up is BYE.

24. NC State Wolfpack (5-2)

In the first half of the game against the 5th ranked team in the country. The NC State scored 10 points. It could have been a good time to start thinking about the future. What could have been? The offense has been MIA since NC State's last lead of the game, a 24-9 loss to Syracuse before this week's bye.

The next game is against Virginia Tech. The app is available on the Disney/ESPN website.

25. South Carolina Gamecocks (5-2)

The win over Texas A&M doesn't matter as much as it should because of the way the game was played. South Carolina's special teams received a huge boost fromXavier Legette, who opened the game with a 100 yard kick return for a touchdown and recorded a tackle on kick coverage in the fourth quarter. The offense went cold in the second quarter, but the Gamecocks were never in danger of losing the lead. South Carolina won a fourth game in a row for the first time in five years, thanks in part to a huge performance by the cornerback.

The next game is against Missouri. The SEC Network is available on the SEC Network app.
