A reader posted a great tip in our Frequent Mile Insiders Facebook group last month and I had missed it, but it still appears to work, you can get a bonus 5,000 airline miles on many Rocketmiles bookings by starting at Pointshound.com The deal can only be used once per account and will be useful for single nights stays. If you book through a third-party online travel agency, you don't earn hotel points, elite night credit, or elite benefits. If you don't care about those things, this could be a good return.
If you go to Pointshound.com, you will see a message that says Rocketmiles may have acquired it. You will be directed to rocketmiles.com. Some hotels will show an increase in their payouts that include bonus miles at some properties.
Before I went to Pointshound, I checked this property out for a stay in Chicago, Illinois. I can earn 5,000 American Airlines miles at The Chicago Hotel Collection Wrigleyville.
If I start at Pointshound.com and choose American Airlines as my preferred earning partner, I will receive 5,000 bonus miles at this property.
My understanding is that only base miles count. The booking would earn 10,000 American Airlines miles and 5000 Loyalty Points. It's nice to have an additional 5,000 miles.
Earnings rates can be different for partners. A one-way domestic business class award on United would be nearly enough for the same property to earn a total of 12,000 miles after the bonus.
You can do better if you just want to buy miles. There is a hotel that sells for $209 and has 11,000 Turkish miles.
I don't think that's a good price for a promotion, but it's probably not the best one out there.
The 5,000 bonus miles are not added to all properties, and in some cities, no properties qualify for the bonus. The reader who posted this thought it was only properties with at least 5,000-7,000 miles that got the bonus 5K. I have not been able to find a property that is cheaper than the $209 property shown above that includes the bonus 5K miles.
It looks like this deal is valid for bookings through the end of the year, and it is only valid one time per account, not specified in the terms.
