Tens of thousands of people gathered in Berlin on Saturday to show their support for protesters in Iran, where a movement sparked by the death of a woman in the custody of morality police has evolved into a challenge to the Islamic Republic.

Around 37,000 people joined the German demonstration, according to Berlin police. The participants held up Iranian flags and signs with the slogan " Women, Life, Freedom."

The demonstration started at the Victory Column in Berlin's Tiergarten park and went through central Berlin.

Some demonstrators said they came from all over Europe to show their support.

There were more antigovernment protests in Tehran on Saturday. Following the death of a young woman in the custody of the morality police in Iran, the country's mandatory hijab was the focus of a nationwide movement.

According to rights groups, over 200 people have been killed by security forces.

The government in Tehran has been in the spotlight in European capitals due to allegations that Iran has supplied drones to the Russians.
