Magic Johnson is in the process of buying a stake in the Las Vegas Raiders. Sources with knowledge of the deal told the outlet that the transaction could set a record.

Since his retirement, the former Los Angeles Lakers star, widely regarded as the greatest point guard of all time, has had his hands in a number of sports related business deals. He is already a part-owner of the MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers, and has been assembling a team of investors in recent weeks to try and make a bid for a piece of the Raiders.

According to reports, the Raiders are conducting due diligence. The price for the minority stake was not made public. Forbes reported in August that the Raiders had been offered a minority stake in the club.

The $6.5 billion valuation is a record for professional American sports.

The tradition of high-valued football teams continues with the proposed purchase of part of the Raiders by Johnson. There are at least 16 National Football League clubs worth at least $4 billion. The Dallas Cowboys are the highest valued team in the world. The Cincinnati Bengals are the lowest valued club in the league.
