Most observers were surprised by the news, since only 50 MPs have publicly declared their support.

Neither Johnson nor Sunak have formally announced they are running, but the former Chancellor of the Exchequer is said to be the only other candidate who has cleared the 100 nomination threshold.

Johnson returned to London on Saturday after a two week vacation in the Dominican Republic.

A Sky News reporter who was on the plane said that Johnson was booed by some passengers on his flight home.

Conservatives were skeptical of the claim that Johnson hit 100 nominations.

What To Watch For

The candidates have until Monday to get 100 nominations. The new prime minister will be determined by the number of nominations received. The top two vote-getters will appear on an online ballot, with the 170,000 registered members of the Conservative Party voting to pick a new prime minister. There is no election date set.

Key Background

Johnson resigned as prime minister in July after a number of scandals, such as parties he illegally held during Covid lockdowns and sexual harassment allegations against a colleague. In an election that closed on September 2, the Conservative Party chose Prime Minister Liz Truss as its new leader and she took office on September 6. Her six weeks in office were marked by failed economic policies and the death ofQueen Elizabeth II. When Truss leaves office, he will be the shortest-serving British prime minister.
