If you want a Windows laptop with as large of a screen as possible, you can either get the Dell XPS 17 or the Gram 17. The equation between the two is easy to understand. If you care about more than power, go Gram.

Every Gram 17 is different. One of the lightest and longest- lasting laptops in the big-screen sphere is this one. My 12th Gen Core i7-1260P unit is currently listed at $1,799, but Grams are available for as low as $1,599. The Gram miles are more affordable due to the fact that they aren't cheap.

The choice is clear for those who want the extra space of a 17-inch screen without the extra weight of a big-screen rig. There isn't anything else like it on the market. If you purchase the thing, here is what you can expect.

  • Huge, high-resolution screen
  • 12-hour battery life
  • Under three pounds
  • Graphically weak
  • Flimsy chassis
  • A bit pricey

It is under three pounds and the primary draw. I can't tell you how light this thing feels. It feels like you are picking up a blank piece of furniture. I worried that I had forgotten to put it in my backpack. The thing is not very bright.

The Gram is not as thin as the XPS 17 but it is not as thin as you might think. I don't think backpack space is your biggest concern if you go for a 17-incher.

No speaker grills, but the audio is still excellent.

The device has a screen that goes all the way down. There's a lot of screen. I don't have much to say about this part of the laptop, but it's lovely to have this much space. I can open more than one window and app at a time. I can zoom in on the words I read or write. I want to return to my 13-inch device because I can fit so much on this panel. The fact that it has no glare in sight is icing on the cake.

The case is weak.

Things to know about the Gram.

The case is weak. The obsidian black finish picks up fingerprints pretty quickly, though it didn't scratch during my rough time with it. Flex in the keyboard and screen is significant. The keyboard is easy to use. The bottom of the stroke feels a bit harder than a laptop keyboard, but the click is quite satisfying and the keys are roomy. The XPS 17 doesn't have a num pad. I don't like having to use two hands to adjust the volume since it requires me to use F10 and F11 from the Fn key. There is a lock slot on the right, as well as two USB-C, one HDMI, and one headphones on the left. The 65W charging port will sometimes occupy one of theusb-c ports. Everything you need, no complaints. It has a great click. It feels a lot like clicking on the XPS.

The webcam is 1080p, and it looks decent.

The Grams Core i7-1260P is a step down in power from the processor that powers Dell's machine. The Gram and the XPS have the same power density. It gives the Gram a huge win in battery life, but it also gives the XPS an advantage.

The Gram's battery life was excellent.

The 1260P is adequate for most of the work I do. The Gram doesn't have a graphics card, but it can be used to create content. The device was able to complete our typical export test in 10 minutes and 45 seconds, which is slow but not horrible. I wouldn't recommend this device if you'll be using a lot of Adobe software because it's unresponsive and slow.

More ports than you’ll find on most ultraportables these days.

This is not a good option for gaming. I got 28 frames per second from Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 13 frames per second from Red Dead Redemption 2, and 14 frames per second fromHorizon Zero Dawn. If you like gaming, you should change the settings on games that are more demanding.

These used to weigh a gram, hence the name.

The Gram's battery life was excellent. I got an average of 12 hours and six minutes of consistent work use out of the device with medium brightness, which is the longest lifespan I have seen from a non- Apple laptop this year. This is quite refreshing, given that this generation of Intel- powered laptops has been having some issues.

I will miss using it as my work driver because it doesn't have the graphics power that I need. The extra screen space made it easy to walk around. I didn't need to worry about plugging the machine in because of the long battery life.

The primary compromises to consider are build quality and the computing needs of your own work. If you want a 17-incher and don't mind compromises, the Gram is a good choice.
