A first half of few chances saw the Reds enjoy the best of the play, but they failed to take advantage when Fabio Carvalho's effort at Dean Henderson was tame.

When Taiwo Awoniyi forced Joe Gomez into a mistake in the second half, it allowed the hosts to score from the spot. Their lead was almost doubled before James was able to block Morgan's attempt.

Steve Cooper's side earned all three points after Henderson produced a strong reaction save to prevent Van Dijk from scoring in injury time.

Positives

After a number of injury problems, a positive performance for Curtis Jones will help the team, as will another bright display from Harvey Elliott.

Negatives

The Reds were careless in their possession of the ball. Awoniyi punishedLiverpool for returning to their ways of giving multiple counter- attacks.

Manager rating out of 10

The game plan looked to be enough for the win, but individual mistakes on the pitch meant there was little he could do.

The opening goal was cannoned back off of the woodwork and into the path of Awoniyi, so there wasn't much Alisson could do about it. The game was kept at one point.

Andy Robertson often made the right decision when going forward and didn't allow much to develop down his flank.

The biggest moment of the game was when he didn't direct his headed goal from 6 yards out. Henderson made the save because of his injury time effort.

Sometimes Joe Gomez took too long on the ball and was caught out in the second half when he tried to foul Awoniyi before the opening goal.

James played on the right channel and tried to overlapElliott to create chances with crosses into the box. The block was in the game.

He looked to anchor the back four, but he couldn't get close to the Forest players. He lost the ball in the 85th minute when he ran into traffic with the ball.

In a role that saw Jones look to control the game from the middle rather than creating goal- scoring chances, he was 7. After some time on the sideline with an injury, he performed well in a role that could suit him in the future.

As the Reds frequently created attacks down the right flank, HarveyElliott looked bright every time he had the ball, and he almost picked up an assist with an exquisite pass that provided Carvalho with a one-on-one opportunity.

The 20-year-old had the first chance of the game but couldn't get the finish. At times, it was a waste of time.

Firmino did not make the most of his limited opportunities in possession. The replacement was in the 76th minute.

Hesitant with decision making and couldn't seem to get going against Forest's deep back line. When he had more time than he thought, he failed to get a proper connection.

Substitutes

Trent Alexander-Arnold had a number of dangerous set-piece deliveries that almost led to goals. Had a chance to get a save from Henderson.

The captain pressed from the middle to help win the ball back.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was introduced for Firmino for the first time this season.
