  • Five new routes are being launched by Avelo Airlines to the New Castle airport.

  • In the US, Delaware is the only state without commercial airline service.

  • Avelo currently has bases in California, Connecticut, and Florida.

Delaware is the First State, but it has been left out by commercial airlines.

On February 1st, Avelo Airlines will open a new base at the New Castle Airport.

The airline's fourth base will be New Castle, Pennsylvania, which had to be delayed due to waning demand after Hurricane Ian.

A gateway to the East Coast state will be created by the new operation with five new routes to Florida.

Avelo CEO Andrew Levy said in a press release that the company's low fares and nonstop flights to five sun-drenched Florida destinations will make traveling easier than ever.

The entrance of Avelo is a positive sign for the abandoned state, which has struggled to maintain airline service due to low demand. Frontier Airlines pulled out of Delaware on June 6th after 16 months of operation, stating that there wasn't enough demand to support the service.

"We are continually evaluating our routes and ILG will certainly remain in the consideration set for potential service in the future," the airline's spokeswoman told Insider in May.

Since Frontier's departure, the passenger terminal at the airport has been upgraded and has managed charter and general aviation flights. The new ticket counter, gate areas, and infrastructure can be used again after Avelo's operation.

Delaware River & Bay Authority executive director Thomas J. Cook said that customers could skip the stress, expense, and hassles of a big city airport if they chose to use theWilmington Airport.
