Seattle and Portland were found to have the worst air quality in the U.S. The sun barely peaked through the smog in Seattle and the sky was brown. The skyline of Seattle was covered in an ominous gray veil.

To protect themselves from the worst of the smoke, residents were urged to wear their masks outdoors and to not spend a lot of time outside. People in Oregon are using N95 respirators for protection, according to a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. The National Weather Service had air quality advisories in effect for Seattle.

The fires have caused poor air quality in the past. In September of this year, Seattle had the worst air quality in the world, while Portland was third after Pakistan. The haze in the Pacific Northwest last month was caused by the fires.

Climate change has led to more fires due to the dry and hot conditions. The smoke can be seen in many areas. Bad air quality is possible for the opposite coast in a matter of days due to excessive wildfire smoke. The air quality in New York City was among the worst in the world in July of last year. Some of the smoke traveled to the farthest point in the world.

There is a chance of rain today and into the weekend in the Pacific Northwest.
