When things go wrong, elite status can make travel more enjoyable. Thanks to elite-specific phone lines, our team of frequent travelers has been able to save hours on the phone when things go wrong.

We have earned a number of statuses across the major hotel and airline loyalty programs. We will give you an inside look at which statuses our team is keeping and why they are doing so.

For your own elite status goals, use this as a source of inspiration.

Katie Genter, senior writer

I will need to requalify for multiple hotel and airline statuses by the end of the year or by the end of February of next year.

In this story, I'm not talking about all of the elite statuses I'm earning. I'm requalify for Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite, World of Hyatt Globalist, American Airlines Executive Platinum, and I'm requalify for IHG OneRewards Diamond Elite for the first time.

IHG One Rewards Diamond Elite

InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort in Vietnam. KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

I've held Platinum Elite status in IHG's loyalty program for a long time and it's a perk of the IHG rewards premier credit card.

I was able to earn Diamond Elite status after just 15 nights after using the status challenge. It takes 70 nights or 120,000 points within a year to get Diamond Elite status.

The refreshed loyalty program has a lot of useful benefits. Every 10 elite-qualifying nights, members earn milestone rewards.

A confirmable suite upgrade and an annual lounge membership are included in the milestone rewards.

You can sign up for our newsletter.

Breakfast is now a welcome feature for Diamond Elite members at full-service and select-service brands. I've had better luck with upgrade since the program was rolled out. It's easy to use my Diamond Elite perks when I redeem Ihg points.

I pay the annual fee on my credit card because I like it.

World of Hyatt Globalist

Alila Fort Bishangarh in India. KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

I became a World of Hyatt Globalist in 2021. I wanted to requalify for Globalist status this year as I have enjoyed my benefits and booking off-peak Category 1 award nights for just 3,500 points per night.

I'll be able to requalify for Globalist by the end of the year. The perks of World of Hyatt Globalist have been my favorites so far.

  • Waived parking fees on award stays.
  • Waived resort fees on all stays.
  • Generous upgrades (that were visible in my account before check in) on many stays.
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. late check-out when I need it.
  • Complimentary breakfast.

I like that I can match my Globalist status to MGM rewards and get MGM rewards gold status, which will waive resort fees when I stay in Las Vegas.

The World of Hyatt elite status is worth something.

American Airlines Executive Platinum

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

I hold American Airlines Executive Platinum status and plan to requalify during this qualification period.

The qualification period for American Airlines was changed when it introduced Loyalty Points. The current requirement for Executive Platinum status is 200,000 Loyalty Points.

I need 200,000 Loyalty Points to be eligible for Executive Platinum. I should reach the required threshold with flights, SimplyMiles, AAdvantage eShopping and spending on American Airlines credit cards by the end of February.

I would like to requalify for American Airlines Executive Platinum instead of going to Platinum Pro, which I have already qualified for.

  • Higher complimentary upgrade priority on American marketed and operated flights within the U.S. and between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Bermuda and Central America.
  • Complimentary upgrades on AAdvantage award tickets for travel within North America on American.
  • Another loyalty choice reward.
  • 120% mileage bonus on top of base miles when flying with American and participating Oneworld airlines.

Oneworld Emerald status, which is offered to both AAdvantage Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum elites, provides first-class lounge access and first-class priority check-in lines, so I think it's worth the extra cost.

Is it possible to chase American Airlines elite status? There are many ways to earn loyalty points.

Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite

Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park Entrance Disneyland in California. SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY

I earned Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite status in the year 2021. I only need 45 more elite night credits each year to become Titanium Elite because I have both Marriott Bonvoy Boundless and Marriott Bonvoy Business credit cards.

Even though we focused on getting my husband to the 75 elite night threshold first this year with Marriott, I should end the year with 78 elite nights, three more than I need to requalify. We both wanted to requalify for Titanium Elite this year instead of going to Platinum Elite.

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless is for the long term.

Andrew Kunesh, senior points and miles editor

Two hotel statuses and one airline elite status were the focus of my attention this year. I changed one of my hotel statuses, upgraded another and maintained top tier elite status with my airline of choice. I will be earning status with another airline by the end of the century.

American Airlines Gold

SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

I'm close to earning American's entry level elite status, Gold. I've never flown on an American flight this year.

I don't know how I will get American Gold. I do the American shopping portal, credit car rentals to American and use SimplyMiles when they align with my shopping needs. This is due to the fact that I value American miles for booking partner flights.

There is a $2,000 minimum spend on the new AAdvantage credit card. I will get American Gold status once I complete the three Avis rentals I have planned. I don't know how often I'll use it, but it will be nice if I need to fly American or Oneworld next year.

I did not take a single flight to earn American Airlines gold status.

Delta Diamond Medallion

ANDREW KUNESH/THE POINTS GUY

Delta has been my favorite airline since I joined. I earned Diamond Medallion for the first time last year and I am on track to keep it over the next two-and-a-half months. This includes a ticket from New York to South Africa on Virgin Atlantic, which will earn over $5,000, despite the ticket being in the premium economy.

I have enjoyed a roughly 60% upgrade rate on Delta domestic flights this year, and have been able to redeem three of my four global upgrade certificates. Diamond is well worth it because of the Sky Club companion pass and bonus mileage earning.

It will be more difficult to get a Diamond Medallion. The airline recently announced it would raise the requirement for Diamond from $15,000 to $20,000 so I will have to fly more and book long-haul flights on partner airlines.

World of Hyatt Explorist

The Andaz Prague. ANDREW KUNESH/THE POINTS GUY

I tried to go to Hyatt Globalist this year, but it looks like I'm going to go to Explorist.

Four more nights will be booked by the end of the year. I will be upgraded from Discoverist to Explorist in the near future.

I intend to open a Hyatt co branded credit card in January of next year.

Marriott Platinum Elite

Le Roch Hotel & Spa, Design Collection in Paris. ANDREW KUNESH/THE POINTS GUY

I will end the year with 62 Marriott elite nights, which isn't good enough to get me Titanium Elite status.

That is fine with me. I haven't received much value from my Marriott status this year, as most of my stays are low-end.

I will get the same benefits when I stay at higher-end properties like free breakfast and lounge access, even though I won't get the higher bonus points earning. I don't think I will know the difference at lower end properties.

Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite

JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa. KATHRYN ROMEYN/THE POINTS GUY

Marriott Bonvoy Titanium status has been beneficial for me.

I have the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card and the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card in my wallet and I'm halfway to Titanium Elite status. I have 40 elite night credits. Every year, I need 35 more nights to get Titanium Elite.

The Suite Night Awards are the most useful benefits for me. All of the Suite Night Awards I applied for were approved. I was very pleased with the suites I was given. On late-night flights, I use the 4 p.m. checkout.

Air Canada Aeroplan 25K

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

I want to get Aeroplan 25K status again.

Aeroplan 25K has been great for me. Aeroplan 25K status was given to me by the Chase Aeroplan credit card. Automatic Aeroplan 25K Status is provided for the remainder of the calendar year in which you apply and the following calendar year.

My plan is to keep your Aeroplan 25K Status with $15,000 in account spend during a calendar year. Aeroplan 25K provides a number of nice benefits.

  • Free checked bags.
  • 50% discount on Preferred seats.
  • Priority airport services: faster service at check-in.
  • 20 eUpgrade credits.
  • Star Alliance Silver status.

One of the most useful perks of Aeroplan 25K is that members get priority phone access and are ranked higher than non-elite passengers on the wait list. It was good for me when my Air Canada flight was canceled. Within five minutes, I was rebooking on a later flight.

The eUpgrade credits are something I enjoy. These allow you to upgrade to better cabins on Air Canada flights The number of credits is determined by a few factors such as the cabin you want to upgrade to, the distance you travel and the fare you purchase. I have found that using these on flights between Chicago and Toronto gives me more comfort.

Kyle Olsen, points and miles reporter

Students were housed in empty hotels during the early days of the swine flu. I got 5 million Marriott points, 4 millionHilton points, and 1 million Hyatt points from that venture.

I've prioritized requalifying for top-tier status with each of my favorite hotel brands while also earning status on United and American.

United Airlines Premier 1K

NICOLAS ECONOMOU/NURPHOTO/GETTY IMAGES

United has been my preferred carrier since I joined the premier 1k. I've been able to redeem my United miles for 5 cents per mile by using some of the hidden gems in the program.

I enjoy some of the benefits of the premier 1k.

Through United's Star Alliance partners, I was able to get requalify for premier 1k status for a fraction of the normal price.

There are last-minute strategies for the United premier elite.

Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite

A suite at the W Rome. KYLE OLSEN/THE POINTS GUY

Marriott has a lot of hotels, but I don't like the AmbassadorElite program. More Marriott Bonvoy members will have Platinum Elite status as a result of the recent changes to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card. It's possible that a sudden influx of new Platinum Elite members could affect benefits.

For many of the reasons mentioned by Ehsan, I've been re qualified for Ambassador Elite status.

  • 17.5 points per dollar on most Marriott stays.
  • Complimentary suites upgrades on most stays.
  • Complimentary breakfast for two people at most brands.
  • Property-specific welcome gifts like complimentary massages and in-room amenities.

Marriott Bonvoy elite status is worth in 2022.

American Airlines Platinum

KYLE OLSEN/THE POINTS GUY

I was intrigued by American's new loyalty points system and decided to participate in a corporate status match. By flying with American's partners on long-haul, inexpensive, premium cabin flights, I have been able to earn Loyalty Points for less expensive than if I flew American flights.

I am happy to have locked in some of the benefits of AAdvantage Platinum.

  • Oneworld Sapphire status for advanced seat assignments and business class lounge access on most flights.
  • Main Cabin Extra seating at the time of booking.
  • 1 World of Hyatt point per dollar spent on American flights.
  • Upgrades to premium-class on Alaska flights and Even More Space on JetBlue.

What is the value of American Airlines elite status in the future?

World of Hyatt Globalist

The Park Hyatt Chicago. CAMERON SPERANCE/THE POINTS GUY

When status requirements were reduced, I qualified for Globalist status with Hyatt. Some of my favorite Hyatt Globalist benefits are listed here.

  • Breakfast for up to four registered guests (and Hyatt's breakfasts are notorious for offering a full buffet rather than limited continental options).
  • Waived resort or destination fees.
  • Waived parking fees on award stays.
  • Valuable redeemable hotel points.
  • 1 American mile (and Loyalty Point) per dollar on Hyatt stays.

The World of Hyatt Credit Card gives 4 bonus points per dollar on Hyatt purchases and has a Category 1 certificate. The card gives me five elite nights per year towards my Hyatt status and an extra two elite nights per year for every $5,000 I spend on the card.

Everything you need to know about the World of Hyatt is listed here.

National Executive Elite

The points guy is Kyle Olsen.

It might seem odd to include a car rental status in this article, but it has gone above and beyond this year. National provides upgrades to German luxury cars on my rentals after I achieved Executive Elite status from United Airlines.

No second driver fees, private airport delivery, and the ability to earn a free day after just five rental credits are some of the perks of National Executive Elite status.

There is a guide to earning, redeeming and loyalty.

Bottom line

Each of our staffers has a reason to pursue them. Marriott and Hyatt statuses are popular because of their generous perks. It is a good idea to redeem your points sooner than later.

The points and miles team doesn't care about airlines. We have an entry level Air Canada elite on the team. We all enjoy the upgrade and priority support that comes with our desired status tier, but we have our own reasons for our airline loyalty.

It's a good time to check out your elite status qualification as well. Before it's too late, audit your accounts and make sure you earn your desired tier. Before the end of December you should start thinking about the best ways to get more miles, dollars or nights.
