Black Adam is not up to par.

It's really boring. The temperature waslukewarm. It's called Mediocre. The person was Bland. It's pretty weird. It is perfunctory That's dull. It's anemic.

These are not words you want to associate with a big, expensive superhero movie, but they are the ones that come to mind when I think about Black Adam. The Rock's superhero (anti-hero) DC debut is all of these and more, a lifeless slog that offers up plenty of big, flashy fight scenes and a ton of gaudyCGI but little reason to care about who won or lost. There is little reason to care about any of the characters.

After the first five minutes of the film, people will be able to figure out what is going to happen. Most of the characters in this movie are shallow and uninspired, and they rely on cliches and powers to get us interested.

Dr. Fate, Hawkman, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher are all introduced at the same time in a film that is unrelated to any of them. Four potentially interesting characters are sold short because there are too many new characters to give any of them substantial character arcs or motivation.

The good citizens of Kahndaq are supposed to be the emotional center of the film, because they just want freedom. Mohammed serves as a welcome comic relief.

All three are stand-ins for people. There isn't a lot of depth to any of them. There are no human touches that make us care whether they live or die.

Everyone in Khandaq only speaks English. The critique of foreign interference in the film is as limp as the rest of the plot.

It is very odd to have every citizen of Kahndaq speak with a vaguely Middle Eastern accent. I am not sure if this is a blessing in disguise or if it makes me queasy, but The Rock's Black Adam sounds like an American apple pie.

Black Adam is nothing more than a show. There is no spine in the movie. Outside of a few bits of welcome humor and some fun fight scenes, this is as phoned in as superhero movies get. It is par for the course for DC and Warner Bros. At this time, the DCEU is synonymous with mediocre.

It only lasts 2 hours and 4 minutes, but it felt like a long film due to its lack of drama.

A movie about a supervillain who is threatening to destroy the world before the credits roll. What a thrill. When the stakes are too high, there isn't any suspense. The central conflict becomes impersonal and unrealistic when it is made so. A lack of interest. The tedium is almost unbearable by the sixth or seventh scene. We want our characters to be in real danger. Give our heroes difficult decisions. That is how you make the audience invest.

There is a mid-credits scene that promises more from The Rock and another DC superhero if you stay awake until the end of Black Adam.

Without a major change at Warner Bros. and DC, I don't think "promise" is the right word. It might be apropos to call it a threat. This and The Batman may be useful for insomnia, but not much else. It sounds like a threat to subject myself to another snooze fest. A good nap is something I like to do.
