The Texas Rangers have hired Bruce Bochy as their manager, bringing the three-time World Series champion out of a short retirement to take over a team that has had six straight losing seasons.
The announcement was made two weeks after the season ended.
The first of those World Series titles with the San Francisco Giants was the first of many for the 67-year-old Bochy.
Chris Young, the Rangers executive vice president and general manager, said that Bruce's passion and excitement about returning to the dugout was very evident during the interview process. He was the perfect person to lead our club as we build a championship culture here in Arlington.
From 1995 to 2006 and from 2007 to 19 he was the manager of the San Francisco Giants.
Young said that Bruce was one of the most successful and respected managers in baseball. With a calm and steady presence, he has a remarkable ability to connect and communicate with players, coaches, and staff. His knowledge of the game is unparalleled.
Chris Woodward and Jon Daniels were both let go by the Rangers. Young said that what Texas did was about half of what they expected.
Tony Beasley was the Rangers third base coach who was once Young's manager in the minor league. The GM said in August that the GM wouldn't be judged solely on the win-loss record. After the season ended, he was interviewed for the job.
