The grimy club music that blares at the end of this week's episode, "Announcement," is called "Niamos! The mix was named after the sunny beach planet of the same name. Volume 1 of the Andor soundtrack from Nicholas Britell contains music from the first four episodes of the season.
Britell has carved a sound for Andor that feels Star Wars when it needs to be, but very different from the sound of John Williams, Ludwig Goransson, or Natalie Holt. The idea of 'Niamos!' is perhaps the top one. When Star Wars gives us club music, it's usually a variation on the smooth Jizz of Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes, the same brassy, vaguely spacey faux- jazz that we first heard back in A New Hope.
It doesn't sound like that. When we arrive on the planet the track is named for, and then again when it plays over the credits of "Announce" It wouldn't be out of place in our own world, but still feels like a part of the world of Star Wars. This grounded, grimy look at the realities of its world building that roots a realistic, human view of the Empire's rise feels like a mirror to our current moment.
It's a good beat.
The first volume of Andor's soundtrack is available on a number of platforms.
