You're morally bankrupt if you plan to dress up as Jeffrey Dahmer. The Dahmer costumes are being banned by eBay.
eBay is no longer selling costumes inspired by notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Though he committed his murders from the late '70s to the early '90s, the true crime series Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story brought him back to the forefront of public consciousness. He made the top of some Halloween costume ideas.
eBay's policy forbids users from selling items that benefit violent felons, their acts, or crime scenes within the past 100 years. "Anything that promotes or glorifies violence towards humans or animals is forbidden."
eBay has been contacted by Mashable.
Dahmer is the most popular serial killer at the moment, but he is not the only one. Everything about it makes me sad.
I was put on a watch list because of the lack of results from a quick eBay search for Zodiac Killer costumes. Three poor approximations of Saudi Arabian men's clothing were found when searching for an Osama Bin Laden costume.
Even if you weren't directly impacted by Dahmer's crimes, the series is difficult to ignore because of the amount of Dahmer related content. The fact that Evan Peters played the killer has not helped matters.
Regardless of your access to serial killer outfits or how hot you find Evan Peters, dressing as a serial killer raises ethical issues. Halloween is less fun when you exploit other people's pain.
It's better to stick to the fictional killers, such as A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger or Halloween's Michael Myers, since they are funnier than the real killers. The costumes are more interesting.
I would be happy if I didn't have to read Dahmer's name again. Unless it's in government documents reviewing the investigation, determining how to better protect the marginalized communities he preyed upon, and ensuring that the police don't mess up so spectacularly again.
