Framber was the first to make a mistake. The Houston Astros starter was forced to try to prevent Game 2 of the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees from unraveling after he made things worse.
A three-run home run by Astros third baseman Alex Bregman in the third frame gave the Astros a three-run lead, but the Yankees came back with a four-run fourth.
The New York offense got off to a good start with a single by Judge and a bouncer back to the pitcher. The ball bounced off his glove onto the ground as he stepped off the mound. While falling on his knees, Valdez dived for the ball and made a throw to first base. The ball went past Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel into right field, and in the blink of an eye, there were no outs.
"I was too confident with that ground ball," he said.
A lesser pitcher may not have been able to hold things together. The Yankees first baseman and second baseman knocked in a run with a groundout and single, respectively, to make the score 3-2, but Valdez struck out Donaldson and Higashioka to end the frame.
There was a disaster averted.
The Yankees' biggest chance of the night came in the fifth, when they had two hits and a chance to score, but Valdez was able to keep them off the board. He had 25 swings and misses, the third most since the start of the pitch- tracking era.
The manager of the Astros said that he worried about a young player being able to shake off something. Guys on the team told him to forget about it. The lead is ours. It's time to go out and pitch. Had he not had his own mistakes, he might have shut them out.
In the past, he might have fallen apart on the mound after making two errors.
I would probably have quit the game in 2019. I probably wouldn't have focused at that time. We work hard to be able to focus better and improve in the game.
The difference was made by his curveball. He threw it 40 times in 101 pitches. During his first visit to the Yankees' lineup, he struggled to locate and fell behind several hitters, creating opportunities for New York's offense.
I felt a bit cold in the first two frames. I wasn't completely warmed up. We're not used to playing with open roofs here. I warmed up properly after that. The curveball improved from the third to the seventh. We make adjustments in the middle of the game.
Bregman's 14 homers in the playoffs are the most in MLB history for a third baseman.
Bregman said that trying to square up a ball is difficult against Luis Severino. He's a great pitcher in the game. I missed a few pitches and was able to square that one up and give us the lead.
The second-half success was attributed to the health of Bregman.
He didn't get going for a long time there. He played more games this year than anyone else and that gave him time to get his stroke. He has been great in the second half. He didn't do very well in the playoffs last year. He's a big game player. He likes it
The Yankees will host the Astros in Game 3 of the ALCS on Saturday at 5:07 p.m. There is an hour and a half later.
