Garland suffered a left eye injury in the first game of the season, but he seems to have avoided a disaster.

Garland won't need surgery after tests showed no structural damage. In the coming days, he will be evaluated.

Garland was limited to 13 minutes of playing time. He scored four points on 2-of-8 shooting with three assists.

The Cleveland guard scored a game-high 31 points in his team debut in Garland's absence. The Cleveland Cavaliers are hoping that Mitchell and Garland will be one of the top backcourt duos in the NBA.

Garland became one of the more promising young floor generals in the league after four years as a point guard. He was selected to the All-Star Game for the first time after posting career highs in points and assists.

They were expected to take a step forward this season after finishing eighth in the Eastern Conference. Along with Garland and Mitchell, who is a three-time All-Star, Cleveland has a deep, talented roster.

Mitchell could be the team's primary ball-handler if Garland is forced to miss time.
