  • The latest COVID booster is being combined with the flu shot.

  • It is perfectly safe to have both shots at the same time.

  • People who had unpleasant reactions to the shots said they felt better in a day or two.

Crystal ROS decided to get her second booster shot in October because she was afraid of another COVID-19 surge.

The recommended two-shot regimen followed by a booster is what a woman in her 40s told Insider she had previously received. She decided to get Moderna's bivalent shot in order to broaden her protection against the virus.

She was going to wait a few weeks to get her flu shot. She decided to give the flu vaccine to the elderly man at the clinic.

He was not worried about getting both vaccines at the same time. I realized that I'm 30 years older than him, so I shouldn't be concerned.

She said she felt a bit slower after her shots. She took it easy for most of the day after her arms were a little tender the morning before. She woke up the next day and said she felt normal.

Insider has learned that many people who doubled up on their winter vaccines had more severe side effects, including headaches, nausea, and a high temperature.

According to data from Moderna and Pfizer trials, the most common side effects for the latest COVID-19 boosters were sore arms, fatigue, and headaches.

According to a CDC analysis of self-reports from those who got boosters last year, people who get a flu shot and COVID booster at the same time may experience unpleasant but temporary reactions.

Some people reported feeling nauseous after their shots

After getting the bivalent booster and the flu shot, Deonys de Cardenas was left with a day of pure hell.

She began to feel weird after her shots. She told Insider that she vomited in the middle of the night and woke up with a bad stomach.

She said it felt like someone beat the hell out of her. There was a lot of sore muscles. I was not feeling well.

She said that the thought of eating made her want to vomit. She said she felt better the next day but still had a throbbing head two days after her shots.

Several people told Insider that they had headaches and nausea after getting their flu shots, even though they hadn't had the same side effects as before.

Michael Bowling wrote in an email to Insider that the headaches and nausea were new compared to other boosters.

He said that his side effects went away within a day and that he was happy to have gotten both shots.

The flu shot and bivalent booster packed a punch for some people

In an interview with Insider, she said that she had little to no reaction to her flu shot. The husband was not so lucky.

She said her husband got both the flu shot and the bivalent booster at the same time.

She wrote that he was down and out for a day. He had never had a reaction to any of the shots before and it was a surprise.

The bivalent booster, tailored to recently circulating Omicron variants as well as an earlier version of the virus, surprised some recipients who doubled up on their shots this year.

After getting her flu shot and booster, Elizabeth told Insider that she felt unwell in the middle of the night and had a low-gradefever. She was surprised by her reaction after getting both shots at the same time.

She said she would get the shots even if she knew how it would affect her.
