A bunch of shuttle bus staffers were going to lose their jobs because of Facebook's plans to cut costs.

WeDriveU, a key vendor that Meta uses for its commuter shuttles, said it will be reducing staff in and around the social media company's Silicon Valley headquarters by nearly 100 people. Some are operations managers and others are drivers.

Hallcon said in a filing that it would be laying off 63 staffers from its San Francisco location around November 25.

The human resources director at Hallcon wrote that some employees could be recalled to work. No Hallcon employees who are being laid off should be recalled.

The vice president of the union with over 15,000 members in the transportation industry says that Meta has cut shuttle staffers from other contractors. Murphy said that all of the layoffs were done by Meta.

The companies that work with Meta are losing people.

Meta is looking to cut costs by 10% or more in response to macroeconomic challenges and the company's under performance. Meta's revenue fell in the second quarter for the first time in the company's history, and is expected to fall again in the third quarter.

The bus drivers who shuttled Facebook employees around the Bay Area are in a precarious situation. Not only is the company pulling back on costs, but it is also maintaining more flexibility than its tech peers in allowing employees to work from anywhere.

The company gave staffers the option to work remote permanently or in a hybrid model when it reopened its office in March. Changes in the workplace are making it difficult for many small businesses in San Francisco to survive.

Murphy, along with union members, plan to protest Facebook's cuts, saying it's the worst time to reduce staff in a market that remains among the priciest in the country. She said it was crazy that the prices were going up.

Requests for comment were not returned.

CNBC reported in July that Meta had cut jobs due to the cancellation of a contract with custodial workers. Janitorial service workers staged a protest outside of Meta Shop in Burlingame, California, to protest working conditions and the cuts. The labor coalition organized the rally. Workers held up signs that said "Justice for Janitors" and accused the company of not treating them fairly.

Dozens of shuttle staff have been cut over the last three months, but the latest notification of layoffs is the biggest we have ever seen.

The rally was held at the busiest intersection around Facebook's headquarters. The union wants the company to ask employees to come back to work.

Why haven't other tech companies demanded they return? Murphy made a statement. All of the people that support the company's overall performance are impacted by the desire to stay at home.
