The premium-priced pickup truck will get an electric upgrade.

The Sierra EV will launch with an estimated 400 miles of range and a fully optioned suggested price of $107,000, making it one of the most expensive EV's on the market. The AT4 and Elevation trims are expected to start at $50,000.

The Sierra EV Denali will arrive amid a multidecade love affair between American car buyers and trucks, with pickup accounting for five of the industry's 10 bestselling vehicles in 2021. Electric trucks will sell just as well as gas trucks if not better according to GM. Electric trucks will lead the way in the shift to zero-tailpipe emission vehicles, according to the company.

There is a love affair between American car buyers and trucks.

The Hummer EV pickup and SUV are the second and third electric vehicles from GM. It will join the Chevy Silverado EV in the electric truck portfolio. There are a lot of similarities between the Chevy Silverado EV and the GMC Sierra EV.

The Sierra EV is geared toward more affluent buyers who want the good stuff, while the Silverado EV is geared towards the mass market. Think quilted leather seats, a large portrait-style touchscreen, hands-free driver- assist technology, and even some quirkier features. I was told earlier this week that it had to be Denali because it signaled the best.

Specs, specs, and more specs

There are many more specifications to consider with the Sierra EV, but we discussed the price and range.

All versions of the truck will have one motor in the front and one in the back. It will be able to charge at a rate of up to 350 kilowatts, which will add 100 miles in less than 10 minutes.

The electric Sierra will be able to go from zero to 60mph in 4.5 seconds. That is quicker than the RWD single- motor Cybertruck and about the same as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ford F-150 Lightning, and the tri- motor Cybertruck. The launch edition of the Rivian R1T and the quad- motor Cybertruck are quicker.

The electric Sierra will be able to go from zero to 60mph in less than five seconds.

The Hummer EV's launch-control start will not work on the Sierra EV. Watts to Freedom only stays active for the initial acceleration, but it will have a Max Power Mode that will allow drivers to remain in indefinitely. Standard, Tow / Haul, Off- Road, and My Mode are other drive modes.

The Sierra EV will have Crab Walk Mode, which will allow it to move across the terrain at low speeds. CrabWalk Mode is enabled by the electric truck's four-wheel steering capability in which the rear wheels turn at the same angle as the front wheels.

These features won't be included in an electric vehicle in the Year of our Lord.

The truck can be raised or lowered by two inches with the help of those wheels. The Year of our Lord 2024 won't include electric vehicles with one-pedal driving and regenerative braking.

The Sierra EV will be able to carry up to 1,300 pounds of cargo and tow up to 9,500 pounds. We don't know how much range you'll lose when you haul heavy items.

It will be able to serve as a mobile generator. Most essential devices in a home can be powered by that amount of energy. The base trims of the F-150 are capable of putting out 2.4 kilowatts of onboard power, while the more expensive trims have a total of 9.6 kilowatts of onboard power. The base model Lightning buyer can get up to 9.6 kilowatts of onboard power.

Technology

I had to poke my head inside because I wasn't allowed to sit inside the truck. The bottom of the screen has a knob in it. There is a small screen behind the steering wheel that displays information such as speed, drive mode, and directions.

There will be a lot of built-in apps on the car's dashboard.

It won't run on the native operating system of the tech giant, but it will have a lot of built-in apps. The Play Store is where GM will put its apps in its cars, without the need for a phone.

I wonder what the engineers at Ford will say when they see this setup in a vehicle. The embedded knob, the row of buttons at the bottom, and the portrait-style screen are all from Ford. The landscape screens in the gas version of the Sierra Denali are gone. The screen is being supersized.

Chris Hilts said that the brand wants to focus on the right way of telling the story on technology. We feel that way right now. Large displays are what it's through.

Beneath the screen is a lot of open-pore wood trim, as well as a sliding wood panel in the center console, which houses a charging dock for your phone. It is the first company to build a wireless charging station into a wood panel.

Super Cruise allows drivers to travel hands-free on more than 400,000 miles of compatible roads across the US and Canada. Super Cruise can be used while trailering thanks to some new radar sensors.

There are a number of cameras around the truck. The Sierra and other half-ton trucks wouldn't need so many cameras if they were designed safer.

I think you can guess how heavy the Sierra Denali will be. At its heaviest, the gas-powered version can weigh in at over 7,000 lbs, and the batteries are heavier than a full gas tank. I don't think the Sierra EV will be as heavy as the Hummer EV or the Honda Civic-scale battery, but it will be close.

“E-trunk” sounds more like something a pachyderm would be packing than anything you’d find in your plug-in pickup.

Design

Design is where the Sierra EV Denali departs most from its internal combustion engine counterpart. The design of the hood is called "Fist of the Wind". The grille has been replaced with a broad shield and two L shaped headlights. There isn't a light bar.

Ensuring that we have that confident, brutish presence on the road is the front end's purpose.

Holt Ware, head of exterior design, said that the front end is meant to make sure that we have that confident, brutish presence on the road. Ask the pedestrians who have to cross the street in front of a truck if they like it.

There is no reason for the Sierra EV to be as tall and brutish as it is. It could have been a lot less dangerous for someone to be struck by a truck. Studies show that tall, flat-nosed trucks are more likely to cause serious injuries and death. American truck buyers have grown accustomed to high-riding vehicles, and GMC was not likely to deviate much from the design.

There is a skyscraping hood. I didn't find anything. The Sierra EV Denali is similar to most of the electric trucks before it. If you need to fill it up with ice and drinks, there are power outlets and a drain. There was more than a six-pack in the Sierra EV's e-trunk.

Let’s be honest, you’ll just be taking this truck to Costco.

On the road again

The Sierra EV will find a number of electric trucks already on the market, including the Rivian R1T, Ford F-150 Lightning, Hummer EV, and likely theTesla Cybertruck.

The Sierra EV will be built on GM's Ultium battery pack and electric drivetrain that is also being used to power the Silverado, Hummer truck and SUV. The Ultium battery pack used in the Sierra is similar to the ones used in the Hummer and Chevrolet. Even though it struggles with its first generation of Bolt EV, GM has already made a lot of promises around the Ultium generation of electric vehicles.

There will be a number of electric trucks on the market when the Sierra EV Denali comes to dealerships.

It will be built at GM's EV plant in Detroit along with the Silverado, Hummer EV, and Cruise Origin. Two battery factories in the US will be built by GM as it continues to vertically integrate new elements of the manufacturing process.

The pickup trucks are the most popular. Even though fuel economy has improved, pickup trucks still consume the most gas and emit the most carbon emissions. The pickup truck market may have an impact on the environment.

There are a lot of loyal customers for trucks. We want to know what the Sierra owners think about the battery-powered version.
