"Sycophants don't know how to deal with Trump," said Gordon Sondland.
In his new book, Sondland said that people have to stand up to Trump to get his respect.
"The Envoy" will be released on October 25.
"Sycophants don't know how to manage Trump effectively," said Gordon Sondland.
The one-time ambassador to the European Union who was fired by Donald Trump in 2020 wrote an account of his time working for him in his upcoming book.
Sondland wrote that he gained Trump's respect through his straightforward approach, an attitude that he called essential for aides who want to "survive" Trump.
None of the politicians in office knows how to use this approach. They're sycophants who built careers on playing roles that aren't real.
Sondland said that sycophancy was not the way to get things done.
In the beginning of his book, Sondland said he thinks Trump is a man with a fragile ego who needs his pride boosted to feed his habit. Sondland said that Trump's allies needed to understand what motivates him to deal with him.
You have to stand up to a bully. If you want to deal with an egomaniac, you have to feed it.
Sondland talked about his interactions with Trump in his book. He said he used to call out Trump for not sharing his food. Trump was offered some mints by Sondland.
It catches him off guard when you call him out, but he likes it. People do it too frequently.
In the first impeachment trial, Sondland testified against Trump. According to Sondland, Trump's team used military aid to pressure Ukraine to investigate Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden. Trump had claimed that there was no quid pro quo.
The impeachment of Trump took place in December. He was found not guilty by the Senate.
Insider's request for comment was not responded to by representatives for Cruz, Hawley, and Cotton.
