Arsenal celebrate their fifth goal against Lyon
Arsenal are aiming for a first European title for 15 years

The result that shifted the balance of the women's game was hailed by the manager as a "special night".

The rest of their continental rivals were made to sit up and take notice of the amazing performance by the home team.

Since 2007, no English team has won the Women's European Championship.

None of the other Women's Super League teams have come close.

If this performance is anything to go by, the wait is about to end.

There have been many moments in the history of the women's game.

The balance of the women's game is changing.

Lyon used to have all of the facilities, money, and funding, but that is no longer the case. We've seen the passion that the players have for each other.

  • Match report: Superb Arsenal thrash Champions League holders Lyon

It's clear how big this win is for the team.

Lyon have won the Women's European Championship eight times. They have conceded five goals in the past. They hadn't lost by more than one goal in the competition since 2009, and this was their second defeat in 83 home games.

'Doing the right things gets you rewarded'

The scale of the victory had taken the manager by surprise.

He said, "We were very effective, but as I told the players after, I think that they work extremely hard to carry out the gameplan both in offence and defence."

It's a great night. I think we won but it was a surprise result against a very strong team.

"Doing the right things, not all the time, you get rewarded for that in football" I think that tonight's reward will increase the likelihood of doing the right things again.

This was the first time in six games that the English team had won against Lyon.

They dominated the middle of the field through Maanum, who was a replacement for Miedema.

Miedema had scored 120 goals in 149 games for the club but her 150th appearance was as a late substitute as Maanum was a menace in both breaking up play and taking the crucial second goal.

'Frida should be really proud'

One of our players has the strongest running ability, and that's why I think Frida is that player. She carries out a role that requires a lot of running because you have to defend two players all the time. She was both on the ball and off the ball.

She should be very proud of her performance.

She gave Lyon's full back a hard time. Three of the five goals were scored by breaking down the wings or forcing errors in the defense.

It was a tactical victory for Eidevall.

"I think it's not a surprise to people that have been following Lyon since pre-season and in the first games in the league this year that they have been exposed in the area behind the defending line."

I'm happy that we're doing it in different ways because it's not that easy to hit the long ball over and we have good positions to draw them out. I was very happy with that.

It was a chastening evening for Lyon, in which their injury ravaged squad was brutally exposed and their only hope was to score a goal.

Eugenie Le Sommer was in the starting lineup for the first time in over a year.

She said they are disappointed. We are not happy with the result, but more so with ourselves and what we did.

We have a group of people that can do better. Even if we made mistakes, it's difficult to take five goals. Lyon needs to do better.

Nothing is decided yet, we must forget this evening. The format allows us to see the future.

We have five games left to get this qualification.
