Mississippi State football player Sam Westmoreland has passed away.
Westmoreland would have celebrated his 19th birthday on Friday.
The school said in a release that it was sad.
The Mississippi State athletics family is devastated by the death of Sam Westmoreland. Sam was a wonderful young man with a bright future. Everyone who knew and loved him will forever remember him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Westmoreland family at this difficult time. The Westmoreland family and student-athletes are our top priority.
The Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Office and the office of the county medical examiner and coroner are looking into Westmoreland's death.
Westmoreland was a football player at Tupelo High School. He was a student at Mississippi State.
Westmoreland earned a spot in the Northeast Mississippi Football Coaches Association All-Star Game as a senior at Tupelo High. He was named to the Region 2-6A second team after his senior year.
