There is a gambling issue in Australia. A lot of people would have gambling addictions if there were electronic slot machines in every bar, club, and hotel.

According to the Australian Associated Press, many pubs and clubs in News South Wales, Australia, are using facial recognition technology to prevent problem gamblers from playing.

Self-Punishment

All clubs and hotels in the state will use the technology sometime next year. Around 100 of them are already using the facial recognition system according to the CEO of ClubsNSW.

Club members and patrons are protected from gambling harm.

The "state-of-the-art" system works by having gamblers who think they should be kicking the habit by self- reporting themselves as "problem gamblers."

If they are caught violating their self-imposed ban, the system can detect their face and alert hotel or club staff.

Overkill

Everyone in the designated gambling area is scanned by the facial recognition system. Everyone is implicated by the facial recognition.

The intended use of the facial recognition system seems questionable at best.

It comes off as an overly elaborate scheme when less intrusive measures could be implemented instead, like a cashless gambling card system.

"Pokies operators are so scared of a mandatory gambling card that they've turned to inscrutable and inconsistent facial recognition technology instead," said the Member for New South Wales.

She said that the state government has lost its mind if it thinks people want self managed facial recognition tech. It's as terrifying as it is ridiculous.
