Liel Abada's second goal effectively wrapped up the quarter-final tie for Celtic

Liel Abada's double helped Celtic to a 2-0 win over Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals.

Abada tapped home Greg Taylor's cross moments before the break, and then volleyed the ball past Liam Kelly in the 60th minute.

Celtic joined Kilmarnock in the last four after Reo Hatate's shot off a post was tapped by Kyogo Furuhashi.

The semi-finals of the League Cup will be held after the other two ties, with the winner going on to play in the final.

At Fir Park, there was rarely a moment in which a shock was on the cards, as Celtic created a lot of chances and eventually found the breakthrough.

Before the break, Kyogo missed a gilt-edged chance from six yards, and then had a close-range shot saved by Kelly.

After Abada tore into the Motherwell box to get on the end of Taylor's cross, there was an inevitability about what would follow.

The 21-year-old added his eighth goal of the season when Josip Juranovic's shot was saved and he reacted instinctively.

Hatate rolled his foot over the ball to move it beyond Kelly's reach and into the empty net.

Abada was given the chance to score a hat-trick by Daizen Maeda but his low shot came off a post, with Kyogo waiting to turn the ball home.

Motherwell were powerless to resist Celtic's movement in the final third, but Steven Hammell's side still had a chance, but failed to take it.

When the game was goalless, Stuart McKinstry had the best of them, but he sliced his shot from 10 yards wide when he had enough time to take a touch.

The Celtic side creates a lot of chances at the other end and those are the opportunities that have to be converted against them.

That's 10 goals in two games and a first clean sheet in nine since the beginning of the year.

What they said

Motherwell pressed Celtic when they tried to play out from the back, according to the Celtic manager.

After we played through their press, we created good opportunities and could have finished the game a bit earlier. Overall, really happy.
