McDaniel details what he's looking for in Tua's return (0:44)

When Tua Tagovailoa returns to the field the Dolphins want to see what he can do. There is a time and a place.

Tua Tagovailoa impressed the Miami Dolphins coach when he returned to the practice field last week.

Tagovailoa missed the next two games due to a concussion. Tagovailoa is eager to return and will be the starter for the Miami game against the Pittsburgh game.

He's focused on the task at hand. He's in his normal state of mind, but he doesn't lose his focus. That's what I like about him. He has been able to have some success in a completely new language.

Tagovailoa returned to practice for the first time after clearing concussion protocol on October 12. He missed last Sunday's loss to the Vikings because of his concussion, but was at the team's facility.

Over the past two weeks, Tagovailoa allowed his role as a leader to supersede his desire to play.

He knows that he has to be present for the players that are playing. He has been very positive, but I can tell that he is thirsty for the camaraderie of the competition.

Everyone around him knew that he was missing out on something. It's cool to know about an adverse situation about a player that you're coaching.

In Tagovailoa's three practices last week, he took on a supportive role as the starter and the backup were ready to go.

Despite the change in routine, Tagovailoa kept his focus.

You saw every single play of practice. He knows exactly what it looks like and he gets excited when perfect technique is executed. You are used to being the starting quarterback in the NFL, so you take every snap when the offense is on. You get in a routine where it goes by quickly because you have so much going on.

It's not just about him, his selflessness, which is why he has a unique aura of leadership that people gravitate to because it's genuine, authentic, and real.

Without Tagovailoa on the field, the Dolphins have seen a decline in their offense. The Dolphins ranked first and second in points per drive and offensive expected points added through the first three weeks of the season. They fell to 28th in offensive EPA and 29th in points per drive.

Both Thompson and Bridgewater were forced out of their only starts due to injury. Robert Hunt said after Sunday's game that injuries are part of the business of the NFL, and added that they have a job to do no matter who is at quarterback.

Hunt said that Tua is the leader of the group. He's the guy who has been in charge and we'll be happy to have him back. We still have to do our job and play a game and win a game.
