Aaron Ramsdale, Nick Pope and Jordan Pickford
Pope, Pickford and Ramsdale are favourites to be named in Southgate's provisional squad on Thursday

Pickford missed out on the last England camp before the World Cup and is expected to start against Iran.

Since his heroics at the tournament in Russia, the goalkeeper has been the number one for the England team.

There are a lot of arguments that Pickford's spot in the squad shouldn't be assured.

Can either of the two men seriously challenge Pickford in the World Cup squad?

Before Pope and Pickford play against each other at St James' Park on Wednesday, the form and statistics of both of them will be analysed by the British Broadcasting Corporation.

'Pickford's personality has got him where he is today'

Pickford has the number one shirt. A manager who builds a team on trust is typified by Southgate.

The goalkeeper has been criticized for failing to keep his emotions in check and making mistakes but back in May, a former Manchester City player said Pickford's personality was a major weapon in his arsenal.

He should not lose that. Richards said that he is where he is now because of that.

Some goalkeepers get pumped up before the games and people don't like it. No one picks at these things when you play well. Everyone starts nit-picking when you don't play well.

Pickford has five clean sheets compared to eight for Ramsdale and 10 for Pope. He has given up more goals than both.

He has faced 154 shots on target with an average of 5.13 per game.

The 28-year-old is good with the ball at his feet, having made 934 passes over the course of the year, compared with Pope's 780 and Ramsdale's 856.

The best passing accuracy of the three is at 58.23%, with Pickford's average of 16.23 successful passes per 90 minutes being the lowest of the trio.

Pickford is the overwhelming favourite to be the first choice.

'Pope doesn't instil confidence with the ball at his feet'

Distribution is one of the main issues when it comes to Pope's chance.

The 30-year-old has played more passes than either Pickford or Ramsdale but has been less successful.

In England's last game against Germany at Wembley, he made a mistake that allowed Kai Havertz to score a late goal, as well as a poor performance with the ball at his feet.

Chris Sutton was a part of the commentary team on Radio 5 Live and he voiced his concerns about Pope's kicking.

Nick Pope was unaware of Havertz who put him under pressure. "Pope doesn't instill you with great confidence with the ball at his feet, even though a shot from Gundogan went over the bar."

Pope has been a consistent performer for Eddie Howe at St James' Park this season, even though it wasn't a very good final attempt.

After a goalless draw with Manchester United on Sunday, Newcastle have the best defence in the league. They have only allowed nine goals in 10 games with Pope in the side.

Pope has the highest save percentage at 74.83%, followed by Pickford and Ramsdale.

'Ramsdale's career is one of overcoming setbacks'

Aaron Ramsdale

There has been a theme for the season. Four points clear at the top of the table, the Gunners are showing signs of a challenge for the title.

Ramsdale has had the same theme in his career as well.

His signing for £24m from Sheffield United was not popular with the majority of the fans.

Many opinions of the 24-year-old changed as a result of his performance last season.

Nick Cox, head of Manchester United's academy, signed Ramsdale as a youth player at Manchester United and says that the goalkeeper's drive to prove himself has always been important to his development.

Cox said they did not think they had signed a future England goalkeeper. We needed a keeper and he came on trial before we offered him a scholarship.

He found it difficult in the beginning. We had to get him to coach the younger academy groups because we thought it might be too difficult for him.

If this doesn't work out for him as a scholar we need to prepare a future for him. He was a great coach, but he wasn't aware that was the reason.

He started to excel by the end of the first year because he was working on his own with the goalkeeper coach.

Pathways to the top are not always straight and he overcame setbacks to reach the top.

Ramsdale has three caps to his name and will be an outsider to start if Pope and Pickford join him. He can't be written off if his career is any indication.
