A dad and his son are accused of trying to kill a woman by shooting at her.
The Polk County Sheriff said the incident was among the craziest he's seen in a while.
Police said that the father and son fired at the woman because they thought she wasn't a real person.
A father and his son are facing attempted murder charges after police say they shot at an innocent woman seven times while looking for people to shoot them.
The Saturday morning incident was described by the Polk County Sheriff as "really, really stupid" and "one of the craziest things I've seen in a while".
Judd told reporters during a press briefing on Monday that he was going to tell them about the incident.
A woman sitting in her car near the Colonacosta's Winter Haven apartment was shot at by a father and son who were alert through their doorbell that someone was at the front door.
Around 7 a.m. there was chaos. A neighbor dropped off a package of medication at the Colonacosta's front door after it was accidentally delivered to him.
What are they going to do? Judd said that the father and son thought they'd been broken into. Are you joking?
Colonacosta and his son went outside to look for a person they thought was trying to break into their apartment.
The woman crashed into the car behind her after she panicked and backed up her car, thinking she was going to be carjacked.
Colonacosta's son heard the "commotion" and thought his victim was trying to back into him so he began shooting.
Judd said that the woman who was shot at had the right to be looking at her cell phone.
The woman was afraid for her life according to the police report.
Judd noted that one of the bullets tore through a baby's car seat in the back of the car and lodged in the driver's seat, as the woman was close to death.
"Here you have two guys who are way out of line, way out of control, and they don't understand the Florida law," said Judd.
The Castle Doctrine law is in Florida. There is a Stand Your Ground law in our country. It doesn't mean you can shoot people. They did that. People were searched to see if they could shoot them.
The father and son did not have criminal records, according to the sheriff.
Judd wants them to go to prison. You don't fire at people. You don't chase people down if you don't want to. It's not appropriate. What kind of crazy thing is that?
Colonacosta and his son have been charged with attempted felony murder, possession of firearms by a minor under 18, assault with a deadly weapon and culpableNegligence.
The father and his son did not have an attorney.
