The Yankees are coming to New York.
The New York Yankees booked a spot in the American League Championship Series with a win over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday. The Yankees faced elimination in the 4th game of the series in Cleveland and had multiple games delayed due to the weather.
The Astros will face off against the Yankees in a best-of-seven series that starts in Houston on Wednesday, with the winner going on to face the World Series champion. The Astros and Yankees finished with the best records in the American League, while Houston took five of seven games against the Yankees.
The Yankees scored three times in the first on a line-drive home run by Gleyber Torres, a sacrifice fly by Anthony Rizzo and a throwing error by the Indians' catcher Roberto Perez. Civale threw just 26 pitches and recorded a single out before Terry Francona took him out.
Judge hit a 81.3 mph curve from Sam Hentges over the right-center field wall in the second to make it a four-run game. It was Judge's fourth home run in a winner-take-all game, the most in major league history, and the 13th home run for the towering hitter, catapulting him past Reggie Jackson and Yogi Berra for the fifth-most in Yankees playoff history.
There was a scary moment in the third when Yankees infielder OswaldoCabrera collided with the Indians outfielder on a bloop pop-up to left field. The player left the game with a left knee injury. He won't be able to play the rest of the playoffs.
The Indians scored their only run of the game in the third when third baseman Jose Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly that scored Austin Hedges. The run was the only offense the Guardians generated in their final game of the season, and they went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
The Yankees scored their second run of the game in the fifth when Rizzo hit a single to center field, which drove in Torres, who stole second base, and gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
After giving up three hits, one run and one walk and striking out two batters, Cortes left the game. He had just four days of rest after he pitched in the second game. There was a mix of his three pitches throughout the outing.
The Yankees' fate was in the hands of the relief corps, which appeared to be their biggest weakness going into the playoffs. After allowing singles to Amed Rosario and Ramirez before getting Oscar Gonzalez and Josh Naylor to ground out, Jonathan Loaisiga struck out Gabriel Arias to end the sixthinning. The evening began with a two-innings pitched, in which he allowed three hits and no runs or walks while striking out two, and ended with a two-innings pitched, in which he allowed two hits and no runs or walks.
In the eighth, Clay Holmes came in and shut down the top of the Guardians' order, inducing a groundout from Ramirez.
The ball was handed off to the relief pitcher, who has become one of the go-to pitchers for the Indians. Peralta struck out Gimenez and allowed a single to Maile before he was able to ground out. With two runners on, Peralta got Straw to ground into a fielder's choice and punch New York's ticket for a game against the Astros.
Game 1 of the ALCS between the Yankees and Astros will take place in Houston on Wednesday. There is an hour and a half later.
