Southwest has no change or cancelation fees, so you can always book a Rapid rewards ticket, even if you don't know if you'll be able to travel. If you have already booked any travel, you can see if the price hasn't changed, in which case it's a good idea to rebook.

This is lucrative for a revenue based program

Southwest RapidRewards is a frequent flyer program that makes money. The number of points required for a ticket is determined by how much cash a ticket costs. Since the points cost is related to the cash cost of a ticket, there isn't a way to get outsized value. Rapid rewards points can be redeemed for more value.

Taxes and fees add up to $5.60 for that. The value is 1.37 cents per point.

It would cost 9,783 Rapid rewards points during this promotion. The value is 1.71 cents per point after taxes and fees are taken into account.

That is a much better price.

Southwest's Rapid rewards sale is worth considering if you are going to be traveling in the near future. It is hard to get outsized value with a revenue based frequent flyer program.
