What's the key in the Phillies-Padres series? (0:48)

Ahead of the NLCS, Jessica is excited for the offensive power of the two teams. 0:47

The San Diego Padres are not to blame for ruining the party.

The Mets won 101 games, their most in a regular season since 1986, with a rotation that included Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom. The MLB playoffs were gone.

The Braves are trying to defend their World Series title with a better team. There was a lot of power from the Phils.

The Dodgers have won the most games in the league since 1906. The Padres had a lot of fast pitches.

The first season with six playoff teams in the National League was chaotic. Perhaps you like it. Perhaps you don't like it. Dodgers fans don't like it Padres and Philadelphia fans will be happy with the outcome of the National League Championship Series. This is the first NLCS between two teams with less than 90 victories. It's not lacking in star power, it's with the likes of BryceHarper and Juan Soto.

The best-of-seven series will be played over eight days instead of nine, with an off day after Game 2. It will force the managers to dig a little deeper into their starting rotation and put a little more pressure on the pitching staff.

David took a look at each team and our experts made their picks.

Go ahead and jump to it.

Our picks for Padres and Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Phillies

In their three victories, the offense scored seven, nine and eight runs. In a postseason where generating offense has been difficult to impossible, the Phils have put together big periods: six runs in the ninth to pull out Game 1 of the wild-card series against the St. Three of their six home runs have come with runners in the game. You could see more bat slams if you keep hitting those.

Manager Rob Thomson is still working on the relief. The pitcher who picked up his first career save late in the season had his first crack at the ninth-inning role and allowed seven hits and four runs. He was able to close out a 2-0 victory over theCardinals because of the big lead thePhillies had. In the final game against the Braves, Seranthony was set up by Eflin. In the playoffs, Jose Alvarado has served up two home runs.

In 35 games after coming back from the injured list, BryceHarper hit just.227/.335/.352 with three home runs. He has three home runs and three doubles in the playoffs. The sight of a locked-inHarper is beautiful for fans of the Philadelphia baseball team.

Kyle Schwarber, who led the NL with 46 home runs in the regular season, is 1-for-20 with eight strikeouts in the playoffs, and two of his three walks have been intentional.

What is the defense like? It's still terrible. Nick Castellanos made a diving catch in right field in the bottom of the ninth to help preserve a 6-7 victory in Game 1 against the Braves, but he and Kyle Schwarber remain big liabilities in the corners. In the Phils' only loss so far, Alec Bohm is a problem at third base, and in the second game of the series, he butchered a ground ball that led to two runs.

With the elimination of the Braves in four games, the Philadelphia rotation will be back to normal, with the exception of the first two games. With the possibility of seven games in eight days, that means digging into the No. 4 and probably the No. 5 starting pitchers. Nola wouldn't be on full rest until Game 7 and Wheeler wouldn't be on full rest until Game 5. The Philadelphians will like their chances if the series goes seven.

San Diego Padres

Postseason success has become more and more about finding the hot relief, and manager Bob Melvin might have found it at the perfect time. In the playoffs, the journeyman pitcher who spent his career in Mexico and Japan before signing with the Padres has thrown six no-hitters. The veteran has hit speeds over 100 mph in the playoffs. Tim Hill is a difficult opponent for left-handed hitters. After a few terrible blowups earlier in the season with the Brewers and Padres, Josh Hader is back to his old self. In the playoffs, he has allowed just one hit and has a top speed of 100.8 mph. If you want to win the game against the Padres, you need to hit some high-energy heat.

Home runs are needed to win in the playoffs. In seven games, the Padres have hit nine home runs, ranking them 12th in the NL in home runs. Three of those came from Trent Grisham, a batter who hit.184 in the regular season. Juan Soto, who had just six home runs in 52 games with the Padres, is still looking for his power stroke.

Who is hot, Joe Musgrove and his ears? It was red hot. Musgrove made the All-Star team after a strong first half in which he allowed a.205 average and.595 OPS, before hitters hit.254 with a.758 OPS against him. He dominated the Mets with one hit and one ear check, and then held the Dodgers to two runs in sixinnings in the division series.

The Padres' rotation is thin after Yu Darvish and others. In the first game of the series, Mike Clevinger drew the ball and was knocked out of the game in the 3rd. Sean Manaea might get the next chance to start over Clevinger and then he might have to rely on hisTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia.Trademarkia A key role in the middle games of this series could be played by part-time starter Nick Martinez.

What is the defense like? With a couple of home runs and a great defense at third base, there's no doubt that the Orioles have a good chance of winning the World Series. Grisham is the best center fielder in the majors right now, and Ha-Seong Kim is an overlooked infielder. The liability is that Soto is a terrible right fielder who is indifferent to playing well out there. The eye test supports the first percentile in outs above average for the defensive metrics. The Padres want the ball to not find him.

The Padres' plan to dethrone the Dodgers didn't come to fruition in the regular season, as the Dodgers won all six series. The Padres will have home-field advantage in the NLCS because they won the one that mattered the most. The fans brought a lot of noise and energy to the game against the Dodgers. The top three starting pitchers are all doing well. The Padres have the advantage over thePhillies due to the depth of their pitchers.
