When a feature was moved behind the premium tier, a test was run to gauge users reaction. The company told a user who got a pop-up asking them to upgrade that they were part of the experiment to know better the feature preferences of premium and non-premium viewers.
The prices for YouTube Music and the premium in the U.S. are not the same as in other countries. The company says it has more than 50 million subscribers. Ad-free viewing, video downloads for offline consumption, and background play are included in the Premium subscription.
There are a lot of ways to convert free users into paid users. It ran an experiment showing users up to 11 unskippable ads before the start of a long video to let them have an undisturbed experience. The company ended the test after a short time.
Last week, YouTube introduced a new feature called handles that allow creators to direct viewers to their channel easily.
