The new phone is pricey, but a first-gen phone has just been auctioned for more than that.

The piece of tech history was still in its original packaging when it was sold at auction.

The founder of LCG Auctions said that the bidding for the item was fervent. A group of avid and sophisticated collectors drove the price from just over $10,000 on Sunday afternoon to the new record on Sunday night.

The Time Magazine Invention of the Year was the iPhone, which LCG Auctions said was one of the most important and ubiquitous inventions of our lifetime.

The lot was described as being brand new, never activated, and hard to find a better example.

The winning bidder received a device that cost $600 when it was first launched. If you buy the latest version of the phone, you'll get a small 3.5-inch screen, a camera with a measly 2 megapixels, and 4 or 8 gigabytes of storage. A life-size image of the iPhone is included in the box.

Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple, unveiled the first phone in the company's history.
