Sean McVay, the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, said the team has explored the option of finding a new running back.
McVay said on Friday that Akers wouldn't practice for the second day in a row or play in the Rams' Week 6 game because the team was working through some different things with him. Due to personal reasons, he was removed from the injury report.
If Akers isn't traded, then we'll figure out a solution to move forward with him. He wouldn't take the chance of Akers playing for the team again.
He thinks he's a very open- minded person. If there is a good situation for him with another team, it would be the best option for all parties.
If that doesn't happen, I wouldn't say that he coming back and figuring out the best way to use him and be the best player he can be is off the table. I wouldn't say things like that.
Akers has a touchdown on 51 carries. He said he was motivated after scoring a touchdown in Week 3 because everyone else felt like he lost a step.
The communication between Akers and his agent has been clear, according to McVay.
McVay said that sometimes good dialogue can lead to clarity on making a decision that isn't necessarily easy. I'm not going to claim to always make the right decisions, but when you weigh the different things that we're working through and trying to figure out what's best for our football team, that's kind of the direction that we're in.
Darrell Henderson Jr. ran for 43 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries and Malcolm Brown ran for 15 yards on seven carries.
Although McVay acknowledged that a fresh start for Akers may be in the best interests of the team and the player, there's a chance a trade doesn't happen.
McVay said that a lot of the discussions go on and nothing happens. Sometimes things happen a lot quicker if you find someone that accommodates the things you're looking for or that suits the interests of the player and the team. It doesn't take more than one. Sometimes things don't work out.
