Women's Ballon d'Or: Alexia Putellas wins award for best female footballer in 2022

The Women's Ballon d'Or is given to the best female footballer of the year.

Putellas was the top scorer for Barcelona in the European Championship last season with 11 goals.

Sam Kerr was in third place.

The Lionesses secured their first major trophy with a 2-1 victory over Germany at Wembley, and their best player was named after winning the Golden Boot.

Bronze and Bright were also nominated and both finished in the top 15.

Putellas faces a long lay-off of up to a year after suffering her injury in training on the eve of the Euros, and said her recovery is going well, but it's certainly not a battle that is won just yet

She claimed the Spanish league title for the third season in a row after captaining the club to a domestic triple. Putellas scored 18 goals and recorded 15 assists as her side won all 30 league matches.

Although she did score in the final, the Catalan club were denied a second consecutive title as they lost to Lyon.

Putellas won the Ballon d'Or for the second year in a row. I won this prize a year ago and it made me want to improve even more.

Kerr scored 20 goals in 20 games as she helped her team win the FA Cup and the Women's Super League. The player of the year award was one of the many individual awards that the 29-year-old Australian received.
