real life mama coco, Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero side by side

The lady who inspired one of the main characters in the movie has passed away.

Her death was confirmed by Roberto Monroy, the Secretary of Tourism for the Mexican state of Michoacan, who said she had passed away in the same town where she was born more than 100 years ago.

Monroy remembered her as atireless woman and life model.

She is known as "Mama Coco" because she is named after the Disney/Pixar character of the same name in the film. Ana Ofelia Murguia voicedMama Coco.

While the Mouse House hasn't officially acknowledged Caballero as the source material behind its eponymous character, her family claims a team from Pixar visited their area and lived with them for a period of time.

A lot of the exact buildings and architecture Pixar/ Disney documented while doing research for the movie was shown in the film.

Even though she's a local legend, her family stopped trying to get recognition from the company a few years ago.

She would sell her wares to locals. She's survived by a lot of people.

She was over 100 years old.

I am sad.
