I went to Phoenix earlier this week to check out what Waymo was up to. I have not taken a ride in a self-guided vehicle in a while. The last car it was was a Chrysler. I took a ride in a car without a human safety driver.
The public is not currently able to ride the rides in downtown Phoenix. Only people who have signed non-disclosure agreements can hail a ride. The employee used their phone to hail the ride for me. We drove around for about 30 minutes, leaving the vehicle and then hailing it again.
An improvement to its self- driving system was rolled out a few months ago. Senior product manager Pablo Abad said that the planning piece was the change. The newer version is more focused on machine learning and neural nets.

It can take a long time to co-ordinate for all these different scenarios. It becomes harder for other developers to make changes to the system without affecting other parts. If you give the system all of the training data, it will be able to learn the best behavior on its own, rather than having to manually get in there and make changes.
A system that can handle more dynamic situations has been created. The vehicle was able to execute difficult situations more smoothly than I remembered. New features can be easily folded in.
Upcoming cyclists will be alert by it.
I am curious about how the robotaxis operate in San Francisco, since I have been in downtown Phoenix. That's for sure.
