John Oliver devoted Sunday's episode of Last Week Tonight to unpacking and debunking the flurry of misinformation surrounding trans rights in America. Oliver said that some on the right have lost their minds about trans rights.
There's more to come, that's just the beginning.
Oliver paints a much larger picture, expanding beyond those public figures "stoking fear" around trans rights (part of the constantly discriminating, negative press coverage trans people endure) and examining the country's current trajectory.
Oliver says that much of the fear of and arguments against trans people comes from misinformation. The host shared clips from two films, one of which focused on trans kids fighting to participate in sports.
Oliver says that trans kids can experience vibrant lives. People who are trans are not more prone to suffering than other people. We are putting that on them.
According to Columbia University, gender-affirming care improves the mental health and overall well-being of gender diverse. Oliver looked at hoaxes such as false claims that kids identify as cats and said it was heartbreakingly stupid.
Oliver says that the current state of trans rights is frightening. To the extent that some young people are just exploring their gender identity, how is that a bad thing? Are they hurting?
