It's a good idea to book when you can get a cheaper airfare, if you think you'll be able to get away from the cold in the winter. One of those times is right now.

You can fly to Mexico from a number of U.S. cities for less than $250 per person. Many more deals will be available after the start of the New Year.

Both all-inclusive and not, there are a lot of great resorts with pool and beach access.

Scott's CheapFlights was the first to show the deals to Mexico. Premium memberships with the site start at $49 annually, with memberships that get you premium economy and business class alert starting at $199 annually.

As we near the end of the year, the temperatures won't be getting much warmer than they are right now. If you want to go to Mexico in January or February, you need to lock in these prices before they go up.

There are a lot of itineraries that involve connections. It is important to check how long your layover is before you book. With a 10-plus hour stop at the U.S. airport, I couldn't find options that looked great out of some cities.

On this itinerary, the layovers are not ideal. Skyteam and Aeromexico are the two Mexican airlines that you will fly down to Cancun on. It is a short stop in Mexico City before the last leg of the trip. You will have a three-plus hour stop in New York on your way back.

It all comes down to what you like with these deals, because you trade convenience for price.

It is possible to fly from South Florida to New York aboard the airline. You can spend the afternoon on the beach at a cost of $238. You won't leave until early afternoon so you can enjoy the last few hours at your resort before you head to the airport.

Bottom line

You want to make sure you book your airfare at a time when you can get the best deals, as opposed to paying $400 or more for a round trip. If you want to get a warm weather, winter trip on the books now, you can pay a lot less to get to Mexico and back.
