FLORISSANT, Mo. is located within the state of Missouri. According to a new report, there is significant radioactive contamination at an elementary school where nuclear weapons were produced during World War II.
The Boston Chemical Data Corp. report confirmed the fears of the Army Corps of Engineers that there was a problem at the elementary school.
The new report is based on samples taken in August. Boston Chemical didn't say who paid for the report.
The president of the parent-teacher association has a child at the school. It takes your breath from you.
Coldwater Creek was polluted with nuclear waste during World War II and the school sits in the flood plain. Next to the creek that flows to the Missouri River, the waste was dumped. The creek has been cleaned by the Corps for more than two decades.
The Corps did not take any samples within 300 feet of the school due to the fact that the area was found to be contaminated. Samples were taken from the library, kitchen, classrooms, fields and playground.
Boston Chemical had expected the levels of the toxins to be in line with what they actually were. The school had dust samples taken.
The report said that inhaling or eating radioactive materials can cause injury.
The report said that a significant program would be required to bring the school in line with expectations.
The new report is going to be a big topic at the school board meeting. The district said in a statement that it will consult with its lawyers and experts.
Betsy Rachel said safety was their top priority.
The results of the Corps' study were presented to the school board by Christen Commuso, with the Missouri Coalition for the Environment.
She didn't want her child in the school. The effects of these toxins are cumulative.
