Everyone who has already seen Rian Johnson's Knives Out sequel Glass Onion was told last week that both Lansbury and Sondheim make appearances in the film as their own. During the London Film Festival this weekend, Johnson talked about the cameos.
According to a report by Deadline, Johnson said that he didn't think they'd be able to get either of them to agree to do the film, but they were both "so cool" about it. Lansbury didn't understand much of the script but was coached through it by Johnson. Johnson said it was an honor to have them appear in Glass Onion and to have the chance to tell them what they meant to him.
The details of the cameos are being kept under wraps, unless you just ask someone who has seen the movie already, but they are at least a partial payoff to a gag in Knives Out when Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc uses a moment of downtime to pop in his headphones and listen to The first movie that The New Yorker published a piece about him was a plot point in the first movie that was supposed to be about him.
At the London Film Festival press conference, Johnson said that the $450 million paid for two Knives Out sequels has not interfered with Glass Onion. It would be weird to pay a lot of money for something and not trust the guy making it. Even if 600 screens in the country isn't very many, and some people might be three hours away from the nearest theater that will be showing Glass Onion this Thanksgiving, he's thrilled that they were able to work out a deal with theater chains. Glass Onion will be on the streaming service in December.
