Rapid reaction

This is the first thing. They take their chances.

The gap between a mature, fully formed Madrid team that knows exactly what it's doing and a Barcelona team that is still a work in progress was laid bare. Madrid might have had less possession (43.8% to 56.2%) and fewer shots (8 to 18), created fewer chances (6 to 13) and had a lower XG (1.44 to 2.25), but that didn't matter. The chances that were converted into goals by Benzema and Valverde in the first half were the key moments of the game.

There is a battle-hardened feel to this Madrid side, from the experience of Carlo Ancelotti on the bench to David Alaba at the back, and from Luka Modric and Benzema in attack. Youngsters like Vinicius Junior and Valverde are already playing with the mentality and confidence of veterans. Even without Thibaut Courtois, Madrid's lead never felt under threat until those nervy few moments after Ferran had pulled a goal back, before Rodrygo.

Madrid are still three points ahead of Barcelona at the top of the table despite their progress.

There are two It's a wake-up call for Barcelona.

After a busy summer in the transfer market, Barcelona's start to the season has been a reality check. Wednesday's draw with Inter Milan left them on the verge of elimination from the competition, and now they have suffered a defeat.

They had the best attack in the league with 20 goals scored and only one goal conceded, but hindsight suggests that may have been down to the quality of the opposition they had faced. Six of their seven victories have been against teams in the bottom half.

The LaLIGA table has Madrid at the top and Barcelona at the bottom.

They have a lot of tough games coming up before the end of the month.

There is still great quality in this side. They should at least be able to keep up with Madrid, who have moved three points ahead of them.

Robert Lewandowski has scored at least 14 times this season, more than any other Barcelona player. There will be concerns about Ousmane Dembele and Raphinha's form.

There needs to be a balance between the attack and the middle of the field. Pedri and Dembele are better suited to a more controlled game.

There are three. At the right time, Benzema will return to his former form.

The Clsico is the best game to end a goal- scoring dry spell. Benzema missed a month with a thigh injury. Even though he's been fit, there's been a lack of sharpness and a feeling that he's been playing himself. He opened the scoring against Barcelona, a day before he is expected to win the Ballon d'Or.

It was unfortunate that he wasn't on the pitch in time to take the penalty that would have given him the opportunity to make up for his miss. It was a positive step. There's plenty of time for him to find his best form between now and the end of the season, as he has four goals from six LaLiga appearances this season.

Without Benzema, Madrid are top of the table and that can be a good thing.

There are four. At the back, Barcelona needs toshoring up.

Barcelona will not compete with Madrid until they improve their defensive structure and eliminate individual errors from their game. It cost them against Inter and the same thing happened at the Bernabeu.

The first goal of Madrid was scored by Kroos. When Vinicius was freed by Germany, it was Benzema who opened the scoring.

It was all too easy for Madrid to score the next goal, since Vinicius got the ball when there was no apparent danger. From outside the box, Valverde was able to score. He gave a penalty away when he was caught flat-footed by Rodrygo late in the game, although Barcelona will point to a penalty that was not given for the challenge on Lewandowski.

Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen have been injured, but that doesn't explain the structural problems.

It was surprising that Barcelona seemed to be improving in this area. Prior to Sunday, Madrid had only conceded one goal in eight league games.

Player ratings

Luka Modric, David Alaba, Ferland Mendy, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Vinicius Junior are all Real Madrid players.

Subs: Eduardo Camavinga 6, Rodrygo 8, Antonio Rudiger 6, Marco Asensio 6

Barcelona: Ousmane Dembele 6, Sergi Roberto 5, Jules Kounde, Alejandro Balde, and Frenkie de Jong.

Subs: Ferran Torres 6, Jordi Alba 6, Gavi 6, Ansu Fati 6, Franck Kessie 5

Best and worst performers

Real Madrid.

It's the best of the best. Scored the crucial second goal. He keeps making himself undroppable.

Fede Valverde top 3 in the world right now

— Toni Kroos (@ToniKroos) October 16, 2022

The worst is Vinicius Junior. He wasn't bad but he wasn't at the level we've come to expect from him in recent months because he was up against Sergi Roberto at right-back.

There is a team called Barcelona.

Ansu fati is the best. Ansu only came on in the 73rd minute, but he gave more of a spark than the Barcelona players. He showed a desire to shoot from distance within minutes, but then he produced a fine solo run to set up the goal. He had a chance to equalise.

The worst isSergio Busquets. It was too soft on Kroos in the build-up to Madrid's opener. The Barcelona captain was taken off on the hour mark after giving away a goal against Inter.

Highlights and notable moments

Everything happened in the lead up to the Clsico. The horses were able to sense the tension in the air as the Madrid bus traveled to the Bernabeu.

It didn't take long for Benzema to calm the crowd. The Ballon d'Or is expected to be held on Monday, and he is going to get a good start.

After 35 minutes, Barcelona was in a two- goal hole. In 2022-23, the Uruguay international feels it.

The only person who summed up the defense from Barcelona was the one and only, Cristina Alexander. Kevin loved that chili.

One of these men is likely to win the Ballon d'Or on Monday and the other is likely to leave disappointed. Who is who?

He scored his first LaLiga goal in over two months against Madrid at the Bernabeu. The goal by the ex-Valencia player gave the club some hope. With less than 10 minutes to go, gesticulating to the fans is definitely a choice.

After the match: What the managers, players said

Modric said they were happy with the win. We would like to thank the fans for creating the atmosphere today. When Barcelona use the ball well and we have to defend well, we did it. We attacked very aggressively. The game was a great success.

It's just three points when you're on a bad run. We had faith that we would succeed. It was a good chance to keep the top spot. We did not take advantage of the moments when we were at our best. The feeling is that we are on a bad run and nothing is happening. It's only three points and the season is long, but that's not much of a reason to celebrate.

It was a huge pleasure to score my first goal. It was a tough penalty against a great goalie. I'm very pleased. A lot of pressure was put on.

I was really disappointed. In the first half, we slipped up in areas where they are strong. The first goal should have been avoided if we had made the foul. The strength of Madrid is that. There were two opportunities and two goals. We have to understand that.

Busquets had the lowest touches and passes as a starter in the Clsico over the course of the last three years.

In 1959 Real Madrid and Barcelona came back from two or more goals down.

Rodrygo scored four LaLiga goals in 33 games. He has only been taken seven times this season.

This is the first time in the last eight years that the LaLiga Clsicos have been decided by multiple goals.
