It's possible to leave your contacts in a little longer than you should. You probably haven't left a whole stack of lenses, so they can accumulate for weeks.
According to Katerina Kurteeva, an opthamologist based in Newport Beach, California, she had to remove 23 contact lens from a patient's eye.
Kurteeva wrote that it was a rare occurrence when someone kept on putting a new contact lens in.
Kurteeva shared more details about the procedure in a video for Insider.
A woman in her 70s came in for her first check up in two years because of pain in her eyes and blurry vision. Kurteeva thought a piece of an old contact lens could have caused the problem.
Kurteeva started probing the upper and lower eyelids with a little bit of anesthesia and found nothing.
It was only after Kurteeva asked the patient to look down that she made the startling discovery. She told her assistant to start recording.
She said she had never seen anything like it.
The patient asked if I was certain about the number I was counting.
Kurteeva delicately removed them from clumps and then counted them.
Kurteeva said that the video went viral immediately.
"Optometrists from South America, Mexico, and Europe were using the video to educate people about taking their contact lens out at night," she said.
The patient didn't suffer permanent damage to the eye and seems to be doing well a month later. She wore contacts again despite her doctor's wishes.
Before you hit the hay, it's a good idea to take out your contact lens.
There is more on eyes.
