John Fetterman's wife blasted NBC's Dasha Burns for her portrayal of a recent interview with the Pennsylvania U.S. Senate candidate.
Gisele Fetterman was upset when she heard that her husband was unable to hold a conversation.
She said that the coverage did a disservice to her husband and anyone else who is facing a disability.
Fetterman has been struggling with his hearing since he had a stroke. The candidate had to use closed captioned technology during the interview. While introducing the segment featuring Burns's interview with Fetterman, she noted that "in small talk before the interview without caption, it wasn't clear he was understanding our discussion."
New York Magazine's Rebecca Traister and Kara Swisher have called the observation unfair, but Burns has stood by her words.
Burns argued that it was possible for two different reporters to have different experiences. Journalists do reporting what happens in a room. Closed caption was on before and after.
According to the campaign itself, our team was first to be in the room with Fetterman for an interview and myself, my producer and our crew did find that small talk. He does not have any cognitive impairment according to stroke experts.
Fetterman's wife doesn't seem to have accepted the explanations She said that an apology should be issued and that Burns should face consequences for his actions.
There are consequences for people who are in these positions. She was ableists. In her interview, she said that. She said it was appalling to the entire community of people with disabilities.
I have yet to hear an apology. She said she was hoping that NBC would reflect on its handling of the situation.
Questions about Fetterman's ability to serve have been raised by his performance in the interview. While a number of conservative commentators and Republican campaign accounts shared it on social media, Jonathan Martin opined that it was a rough clip for the candidate that would only fuel questions about his health.
On July 15th, the Democratic nominee had a 7.5 point lead over Mehmet Oz, but in the last few days the lead has narrowed to three and a half points.
