This is the second time Abbott has recalled baby formula due to bottle caps.
The company issued a voluntary recall for several of its ready-to- feed liquid products. Abbott said in a statement that it discovered caps on two fluid-ounce bottles that may not have sealed completely.
The recalled formula is mostly distributed to hospitals, doctor's offices, distributors, and some retailers in the US, including Puerto Rico.
Abbott recalled baby formula products in February after a potentially deadly bug was found at a manufacturing plant. The FDA warned against using the products while it looked into the deaths of up to nine infants who may have eaten the formula.
Retailers are struggling to recover from the baby formula shortage caused by the recall. The lack of formula became a national crisis as concerned parents struggled to find alternatives and some fell prey to internet scam where they paid hundreds of dollars to fraudulent sellers.
The Biden administration launched an effort to deliver baby formula to the US from around the world, using military cargo planes.
A shipment from the Netherlands arrived in the US on September 29th, bringing a total of 97.9 million 8-ounce bottle equivalents to the US.
