Pete Townshend poked a bit of fun at himself as he set up The Who's "Another Tricky Day" on stage in Chicago. It looks great when I dance.

Townshend was personable and entertaining over the course of more than two hours at United Center, night five of The Who's North American tour.

The idea that the guitarist was reluctant to embrace on opening night in Grand Rapids, Michigan in May has become one he seems to genuinely appreciate. As they make their way across America, The Who will once again be backed by a 48 piece local orchestra in each city, as well as touring solo violinists and cellists.

On Wednesday night in Chicago, Townshend almost jumped in place as his brother Simon Townshend and Roger Daltrey performed. As Townshend unleashed an early windmill, Daltrey picked up a pair of tambourines to play.

Backed by the full orchestra, drummer Zak Starkey shined early on "Pinball Wizard," and strings soon dominated a soaring rendition of "We're not Gonna Take It."

Townshend said that Broadway Tommy would return to Chicago in June of next year for a month-long engagement.

Daltrey went for electric guitar as Townshend crouched for an early solo in one of music's most rocking moments in "Who Are You."

While chatting with bassist Jon Button, Starkey leaned right and shared a laugh. The early moments of the song were highlighted by a violin flourish and Townshend's almost scat-like vocals.

The guitarist explained that the group went into the studio in the middle of the year to make their twelfth studio album. It is difficult to beat the material we did when we were young. We had a chance.

Daltrey was in fine voice throughout, singing as if his life depended on it.

The orchestra is taking a break. We do not work as hard as they do. Townshend said it was harder than he did, kicking off a Who band set with "Relay."

Daltrey and Townshend performed "Won't Get Fooled Again" as an acoustic duo, but Townshend windmilled the song to completion on stage Wednesday night. Townshend sat down to pick at an acoustic to listen to a gorgeous, mostly acoustic take on "Behind Blue Eyes".

Button continues to shine on "The Real Me," making John Entwistle's bass showcase his own, as the orchestra made its way back to the stage Wednesday night.

The band stretched out on "The Rock" after Daltrey put forth a call and response vocal part as the ensemble jammed out the end of the show.

Townshend said that they get an orchestra that knows how to rock every now and again. One of them.

The keyboard players sparkled as Daltrey reached higher and higher on the beautiful vocal piece. After doing a little conducting of his own, Townshend gave a thumbs up to the orchestra.

Townshend said he loved the idea of a big city next to a lake. I hope we will return.

Beautiful three part harmony was on display to open the show as the Steven Page Trio performed on stage in Chicago, their final night as opening act with former Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell and his band The Dirty Knobs.

At the United Center, Page joked, "So you may be wondering to yourself, 'Is that the guy who used to be in Barenaked Ladies?'" I think it is! Is it me?

BNL's "It's all Been Done" was backed by Craig Northey of Canadian alt rock group Odds and cellist Kevin Fox.

Page's acoustic playing stood out on "Jane", from his latest solo album, the brand new Excelsior.

Low cello carried the Barenaked Ladies song "The Old Apartment" as Page unleashed rock star jumps and kicks to close out the group's 40 minute set.

Thanks a lot. Page said it was great to be back in Chicago. We were invited to do these shows by The Who. From the side of the stage, we have seen every show. We won't be able to watch them every night. The trails are happy.
