Boeheim jabs Big Ten over NCAA tournament shortcomings (0:41)

The Big Ten has not lived up to expectations in the NCAA tournament, according to Jim Boeheim. There is a 0:41

9:09 PM ET

Jim Boeheim doesn't care about the conference's record in the NCAA tournament.

The Big Ten finished 9-9 in the NCAA tournament last year, and according to the Syracuse coach, that was not good enough for the conference.

At the end of the day, Boeheim said, you play for the tournament. What you want about the Big Ten can be said. They didn't perform well in the tournament. I think they did that. They won all of their games in their league. You aren't good if you can't play in the tournament.

Only two Big Ten teams made it to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament last year. The league hasn't won a national title since 2000 and both teams were eliminated in the Sweet 16.

North Carolina and Duke played each other in the Final Four, and Miami made a surprise run to the Elite Eight, as the Atlantic Coast Conference had just five bids last year.

Boeheim said that the success of the conference in the playoffs proved that Syracuse's strength.

If the team finishes sixth in the conference, Boeheim will take the Sweet 16. I would like to do better in the regular season. It's definitely true. Every year, I will take that. In the tournament, we have been very good.

Despite ongoing speculation that he might retire soon, Boeheim is entering his 47th season as Syracuse's head coach. He said he was close to retiring. The 2022-23 squad has a number of veterans, including Joe Girard, who connected on 40.3% of his attempts from the 3-point line.

While Boeheim expects improvement from last year, the first losing season of his career, he said his team should be judged by its finish in the NCAA tournament

How many games did the league win and how many lost in the NCAA tournament? The best league to me is that one.
