The workers at Apple's Penn Square store in Oklahoma City voted to join the Communications Workers of America. 95 regular full-time and part-time employees at the store were eligible to vote in the election.
The first election for an Apple store in the US took place. Workers in Maryland voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aeronautical Workers. The CWA called off the election in Atlanta due to intimidation by the company.
In Oklahoma, the CWA filed charges against Apple with the National Labor Relations Board. According to the union, Apple held captive audience meetings, surveilled workers, and told them they wouldn't get the same benefits as non-union workers. The latter point has been backed up by a report that said Apple told employees at the unionized store in Maryland that they would have to bargain for benefits at its other stores.
In Atlanta and New York, the CWA said the same thing. The National Labor Relations Board filed a complaint against Apple after investigating the later claims. In the run up to the election in Maryland, Apple hired anti-union lawyers and tried to discourage employees from unionizing.
