The Education Department allows student-loan borrowers to apply for debt cancellation.
The Washington Post reported on Friday that the student loan forgiveness application was made available on the studentaid.gov website. The department is testing the website before it becomes available later in October and borrowers will be able to submit their forms during this time.
There will be no applications processed until the site officially launches later this month, according to an administration official. The Department will be able to monitor site performance through real-world use, test the site ahead of the official application launch, refine processes, and uncover any possible bugs prior to official launch.
The department will look at the site's performance in real-time and assess any technical changes needed to the website before making it officially available for all borrowers. The site won't go live on a specific day.
This is an important step in the implementation process. The administration told borrowers they could expect the application portal to be live in October, but recent lawsuits have pushed that back a bit.
The White House gave borrowers a first look at the application on Tuesday, which requires them to provide basic contact information such as their names, email addresses, and Social Security numbers.
